"American Stout." Served on-draught into a 10 oz cervoise at Goose Island Clybourn over St. Patrick's day weekend. Reviewed from notes. Expectations were high. Rittenhouse Rye barrel aged. 7% ABV confirmed.
A: Pours a one finger khaki colour head. Nice cream and thickness. Good (2.5+ minute) retention. Body colour is a dark solid nontransparent black. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.
Sm: Whiskey. Booze. Chocolate. Dark malts. Rye. Spice. Decent, but not great. A strong aroma.
T: Rye whiskey. The vanilla and oak notes are fairly timid but are a highlight of the flavour profile and work well here. Good dark malts. A touch of chocolate malt. Caramel. Not as boozy as the aroma, but there's noticeable alcohol here. Imbalanced; a bit messy. Not as complex as you'd expect given the style - especially given that it's a barrel aged beer from Goose Island. Lacks subtlety.
Mf: Badly dry. Smoothness feels off and unnatural. Quite badly executed, actually. Really works against the flavours, not for them. Carbonation is decent. Strangely bad coming from a brewery as renowned as Goose Island. Lacking.
Dr: Fails to hide its relatively modest (for barrel aging) ABV. I like it generally, but I wouldn't get it again. Underwhelming. Goose Island can do far better. Shockingly boozy for a 7% beer. Drinkable, though.
