The original "Portsmouth" ale. This is my wife's favorite ale, and I can see why. Not very bitter, has a watered down kind of taste. Even when fresh, it tastes like it has been on your granddad's shelf for a while. Still, it is quite drinkable, and actually goes down well during sporting events. I keep it on hand for my wife at all times, and find myself occasionally using it for black and tans. It smells like your old man's bar.

Presentation: 12 oz brown long neck bottle, no freshness date.
Appearance: Hazy, almost murky, reddish brown with a thin creamy and well standing lace.
Smell: Mild toffee and buttery malt sweetness, crystal malt is evident … perhaps a heavily kilned crystal malt or crystal malt with a touch of chocolate malt. Hops are minimal but still in the nose.
Taste: Muscular medium body, smooth powdery mouth feel and a moderate carbonation. Lots of malt on the palate that ranges from toasted to caramel to mildly roasted. Even hop bitterness hits quick then a fresh baked whole grain bread flavour kicks in. A relatively sweet beer. Touch of hop oil and an astringent grain flavour in the finish.
Notes: A decent brew that could be easily mistaken for a brown ale. Supposedly this is brew in the pre-prohibition IPA style. Nutfield has better brews in their portfolio.
