Served at Michigan House up in the UP eh?

Very Smooth and light bodied, thin tan head that dies to a ring soon. Deep black colored beer served in a interesting short mug. Still on the light side but its not a bit watery like some oatmeal stouts. Theres not much bitterness in the finish and a sweetness in the taste along with coffee and smoky malts. Served at room temp.

I had it a second time when I headed up there and it must have been a bad batch cause it was really sour tasting almost like apple cider.

Poured from tap into a large pint sized mug. Great presentation, I have to say.

Appearance: Pours a deep brown, not quite black color, thinner towards the edge. Very thin mocha colored head that doesn't hang around very long. Minimal lacing.

Nose: Big nose full of espresso, chocolate and roasted malt.

Taste: Very nice balance as the espresso gives it a good tough of bitterness, but the malt used isn't overpowering with that espresso. Big coffee, chocolate, and a bit of vanilla coming through.

Mouth: Minimal carbonation, but has a nice creamy mouthfeel.

Drink and overall: Overall, a really nice oatmeal style stout. I'm proud to have this available most of the time in my backyard. Really easy drinking, nearly sessionable stout.

On-tap at the pub: Served in a huge round mug and black as coal with any real head on it. Upon a few swirls later it gets a slim cap of light tan foam to appear.

Aroma is all blackened stuff. Burnt grains, old black coffee, char, and only a tiny sliver of oatyness. Its a bit light and doesn't offer much more in any real complexity.

Taste is all black stuff as well. Mostly a charryness of burnt grain and some lighter coffee notings. Again a bit light on the flavor profile and one demensional with hardly any oatyness coming through at all.

Body is a light to nearly mediumness with a overall charred tint and dryness. A bit empty in the mid ranges and doesn't offer much thickness for an Oatmeal stout.

At first it drinks plenty good, but it takes a turn to the limp as it warms. Faintly average at best but worth trying if at the pub. Many locals rave about it, but I found it quite lacking.

This stout has a nice, dark, thick pour. Very flavorful with a mix of coffee and oatmeal flavor. Goes down smooth with a coffee aftertaste that is not overpowering. Certainly one of my favorite stouts and it is brewed in very small batches. I picked up a growler as well, as they began filling these last year. This and the Ivan Pale are always on tap and fresh.

Originally reviewed March 24, 2005. On tap at the brewpub. A murky burnt black pour, with a copious light tan head. Rich coffee, chocolate and malt aroma that waft off the beer. Interesting and complex flavors starts out fruity and full of hops, but finishes with coffee on the tounge and chocolate in the nose. Bubbly and sweet. A nice oat and strong black currant aftertaste with some alcohol notes on the smack. Not very dry, finishes sweet with a touch of fermented notes.

This beer is absolutely fantastic!

The aroma of fresh dark and delightful espresso fills your senses, and with a little shiver as you take your first sip. The smooth, fill texture of the beer washes over your taste buds like a cool enveloping fog, thick yet subtle. The aftertaste is a bit like that of espresso, something that a non-coffee drinker may not enjoy. Even so, the ovrall taste of this beer reminds me of a chilly autumn day, with the threat of a first frost on it's way.

This brew is an absolute winner. As was mentioned, it's brewed in very small batches by the owner himself, from fresh local ingredients.

Calumet is a lucky town.

I'm not a big stout fan, but there are some that just taste great! Here's on.

This beer is lback with just a hint of brown at the edges showing that very little light makes it through this black hole in y hand. Just a thin ring of head on the edge of the glass.

Roasted coffee smell. HMM-HMM GOOD!

Bitter coffee is taste is big up front Followed by roasted malt and familiar (though light) oatmeal flavors. Anybody ready for breakfast? Alchohol can be tatsed, but it is hidden well by the bitter coffee.

Much smoother, and light bodied than I expected. I put the body in the moderate range. Very light carbonation, very nice feeling!

This is one of the top stouts I've had, and produced in batches of ten gallons a week!

Good Job Tim!
