An homage to the 100th anniversary of the carousel on Santa Cruz's boardwalk, Horse Tail Ale is a California Common styled beer. I have 22 ounce of work to get through, so on to the beer:
Dark amber in color with toasted orange hues. The head on top sits about a ½ inch in thickness and sits for a fair amount of time. It has a very....different nose; there's a little sourdough, pine, and red fruits in the aroma, but the most distingishable is an aroma that smells like peanut butter. Let's hope it doesn't make my mouth stick together.
No worries about a sticky mouth, it's good. While there's still a little peanut butter around, this beer has a split of amber ale and California Common characteristics. Fruity esters are the most prevaling, with some earthy and vegetal notes in the background. Light-medium bodied and airy in the mouth. The aftertaste has a little toasted malt.
I didn't have a clue what to expect from my first Santa Cruz Mountain beer, let alone one that wasn't even in the database. The California Common can be a strange beer to approach, but Horse Tail Ale is pleasant enough.
