The bartender didn't know who Emma was. But I'd sure like to meet her. Emma has a downy soft head - somewhat uncommon among northwest lager interpretations. And since the tap handle only said lager, I wasn't expecting what I got, which was a Vienna. Or a marzen. As if there's a difference.
I'll call this a marzen since I drank it on the last day of March. Emma the marzen is auburn-gold with modest carbonation. It's not as clear as you might expect from a lager. But it has an advanced malt matrix - a cotton candy fragrance and overall punky sweetness with notes of marshmallow and a body like your favorite pillow. There's no hop presence to speak of. But you can read oracular mysteries in the head formations.
An unexpected but welcome diversion showing that the smallest brewery in the state can deliver a pint worth your time.
