Two Asheville originals, Asheville Brewing Co. and Asheville native Caleb Johnson, have created a beer to celebrate the American Idol winner’s newest song release, “Hanging with the Band.”
The special beer, a Blood Orange Wheat Ale, will be released at Asheville Brewing on Friday, June 24, at 5 p.m. Johnson will be on hand at the Coxe Avenue brewpub to sing a few songs and sign bottles of “Hanging with the Band” beer.
Only 500 22-ounce bottles will be available, although the crisp, but fruity summer nectar will be on draft at both Coxe Avenue and Merrimon Avenue ABC brewpubs.

A: Pours a relatively clear medium pinkish apricot in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and faint pink + golden yellow highlights. The beer has a two finger tall sudsy foamy off-white head that slowly reduces to a large patch of medium thick film covering the entire surface of the beer surrounded by a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Light to moderate aromas of wheat malts with light aromas of blood orange citrus and a hint of slightly fruity yeast.
T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of wheat malts with light to moderate flavors of blood orange citrus. There is a light to moderate flavor of fruity yeast and a hint of spicy hops which impart a hint of bitterness in the finish which does not linger for long.
M: Slightly heavier than light bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.
O: Easy to drink and enjoyable, sessionable even.
