Peter Hoey is a great guy and a wonderful brewer, who seems to know how to add a delicate touch to his beers and achieve big, yet understated, results. A definate artist in the craft. Anyone who is intimidated by the big maltiness of scotch ales should try this one. It's great from the brewery, as I've had it many times, but this review is from a bottle I bought (interestingly) from Raley's in Oroville, CA. The label is a bit beat up and there's no freshness dating.
For a big, malty beer, this one comes off as very delicate, dry, and approachable. Deep brown color, and clear without any haze at all. Noble hops are in the very back (as per the style), with big carmel and (especially) chocolate malts dominating the palate. Almost no residual sugars to drag the beer down. Faint tartness. The mouthfeel has a slight chalkiness, and has plently of carbonation to pump up the rich malty body. It's a rich beer, but the drinkability's above average.
Highly recommended for those who haven't had a scotch ale in a while, or haven't liked the one's you've already tried. This one certainly changed my mind. Cheers!

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
