DATE: July 28, 2021... OCCASION: Shan and I begin our Newport pubcrawl at Coddington Brewery with a pair of stout-based drinks--the real thing for me, the coffee-infused one for her... the coffee is represented in this stout well enough as it is, a smooth, dark, medium-bodied beer that quenches thirst as it satisfies tastebuds... worth coming out of the town for....

Poured on-tap and served in a tumbler pint, the beer is a light bodied, ruby-highlighted brown coloring with an off-white head. Nose is very subtle, with roasted coffee and mocha characteristics. Dry flavors, with a watered down coffee bitterness and a hint of mocha. Bittersweet aftertaste, with a dry, slick finish. Decent body, but a little lacking on the flavor palate.

Poured in a 7 oz. sample glass as part of a beer flight at the Coddington Brewpub in Middletown, RI.
A: Near black in color with a rich, frothy tan head of foam. Looks rich and viscous.
S: Bitter roasted malt and a light coffee aroma as well as some herbal hops resonate in the nose.
T: Dark roasted malts which give flavors of charcoal, bittersweet cocoa and earthy tree and soil flavors. This blends with a nice, herbal hop resin along the backbone to a surprisingly dry finish.
M: Rich, full-bodied and smooth drinking with a slightly oily slick hop resin.
D: Lots of flavor and low ABV make it a solid option for the dark beer enthusiast looking for a satisfying session. All flavors pull just a hair of a punch, but there's enough in toe to keep you interested. Out of all the Coddington brews I tried, this would have me back for more.

Another great brew from Coddington. I believe this stout is only seasonal, which is to bad.
A tan blanket of foam forms over a dark muddy color. Not much of a smell but a slight coffee aroma breaks through the sturdy head retention. In a certain light it appears to have some red highlights. The roasted chocolate taste is well balanced with a low hop character. Thick oat mouthfeel finishes with that "burnt" almost sour stouty aftertaste. Easy to drink. May I have another please?

On tap, presented in a shaker pint glass.
Very dark brown, almost black, with reddish highlights. A dense blanket of tan foam floats on top.
A nice roast coffe aroma with some hops just barely poking through.
Some bitter coffee, very pronounced oat flavour, some nice raisin & plum flavours to complement. Some indistinct hop flavours to finish, along with an enjoyable sour "twang."
Full bodied, velvety smooth & very creamy.
