On tap at the brewery
My first beer from Coddington! Still on my RI brewery journey and I’m hitting Middletown/Newport today. This is apparently the oldest brewpub in Newport County, opening in 1995 which is pretty cool. Let’s see what their Hefe is all about
Pours a cloudy gold with almost no head and leaves minimal lacing. I also threw out the lemon slice on the rim
This is pretty standard stuff on the nose, nothing offensive but not great. I’m picking up on aromas of overripe banana, bready malt, orange zest, lemon zest, and light clove
Honestly it’s about the same in taste, it’s just decent. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting orange zest, doughy malt, clove, light banana bread, and peppery hops. The swallow brings notes of lemon zest, bready malt, white pepper, clove, and green banana
A medium light body pairs with gentle tingling carbonation, resulting in a crisp beer. Finishes neutral but bland
Really it’s just the most average Hefe I’ve ever had, and not that great at that. Oh well

Poured out of the tap in a recently washed semi-warm pint glass with a fat chunk of lemon (that I tossed).
I liked the lightness and drinkability of this, but a tad bit heavy on the lemon for me. It was a middle of the road, but decent hefe for summer.

Poured on-tap and served in a tumbler pint with a wedge of lemon. The beer is a cloudy orange-gold coloring with a thin, white, low-profile head. Banana and clove aromas, but a subtle nose overall. Smooth flavors, with a clove and bready balance in the backbone. Lemon highlight dances throughout the palate. The aftertaste is balanced with spices and fruit, with a smooth, clean finish. Tasty brew, and very reminiscent of German style Hefs.

Poured in a 7 oz. sample glass as part of a beer flight at the Coddington Brewpub in Middletown, RI.
A: A slightly cloudy, light, pale golden yellow color with a creamy head of white foam and muddled clarity.
S: Smells of citrus fruits, banana and a little hop spiciness.
T: Good toasted wheat and citrus flavor to go with the banana and clove favors thrown by the yeast. A little thin in areas but not a bad, light hefe.
M: Light-medium bodied mouthfeel with a little chewiness and acidic taste.
D: Under 5% ABV and a light, citrusy flavor make this a definite summer seasonal. Not the highest quality brewing, as the beer took on some lemonade qualities at times, but its not bad.

Draught @ Brewpub: This beer had a very odd color. It came out an opaque cream color with no head and a touch of lacing. The color was downright unappetizing. I inquired about the color and was told that it was just dropped to the bright beer tank and hadn't settled. I asked if maybe they should have waited until it was ready, but was met with a blank stare. Anyway, it had a nice aroma (once I pitched the lemon). Notes of wheat, citrus and some spiciness The taste is OK: a decent enough hefe with the typical flavor characteristics. I still can't get over how this looked. It really shouldn't have been served.

Nice wheat beer. Poured a cloudy tanish golden color. Smelled yeasty and hayish. Mild aroma of lemon or some type of spice. Could not put my finger on it. I had the bar tender keep the lemon out so I could get a good idea of the beer before adding a garnish. Nice head and lacing of the glass. Rather sharp yeasty taste with a hint of a grassy citrus flavor. Paired with a nice crisp finish. The clean white head lasted for a while. Very enjoyable on a hot summer day. Good offering of a wheat style beer. Positive drinkablity and taste. Enjoyable all around.

This is an unfiltered wheat beer. The color was a cloudy yellow with a small whit head. The aroma was sweet and full of banana with just a hint of clove in the background. The flavor was much lighter and hard to pin down until almost the end of the glass, when some of the banana and clove properties made a very light appearance. This is a summer time beer and as such was refreshing. May have been served to cold.
