Served on tap at the brewpub, this pours an opaque browish amber color into a tulip glass, with a white head and lots of lacing on the glass. The smell is of hops and lots of them. The taste is intensly hoppy, primarily of citrussy hops-think grapefruit and a bit of orange, along with a bit of a more piney hop flavor There is a superb malt backing, making this a very balanced DIPA. This is excellent!

Originally reviewed March 21, 2007. On tap at the brewpub. Glowing aroma of Loblolly resin and wheat grass fields and freshly crushed sweetgrass. A queer blend of east and west, with touching hop acidity. I can’t taste diacetyl, so no comment on that, but I wouldn’t be surprised as I sense some of those aged lemon goldings hop oxidations peaking through. Peculiarly clouded. Reminded me in aroma, flavor and look of one of my homebrews. Some crystal malt peaks in the forefront with the cascading hop sugars, before sliding into a superbly smooth crisp alcohol. Warming, but not overly bitter and destructive. An "English" IIPA in many senses. Sophisticated, calm and not brash, while maintaining malt body and that chewy, bready rich hop growth. Unique and tasty.

Dirty, murky looking auburn/brown. Creamy off white head leaves lots of lace (thank you hops). Looks like a homebrew, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Also looks like a Bell's beer, which isn't necessarily a bad thing either. The aroma is very thick with hops. Mostly grassy, but also resinous and lemony. Sufficient amounts of malts are present on the nose as well. The taste is hoppy and malty at the same time. Grassy hop tones and the malts are caramel, toffee and nougat all rolled into one. Well balanced. Maybe a little TOO balanced for the style. I personally like more bright, citric tones and more of a cutting bitterness in DIPAs, but this is a tasty beer nonetheless. And maybe age has taken away some of the bright, sharp characteristics. The mouthfeel is nice and creamy...easy going. Medium bodied. A real easy drinker for the %a/v. Enjoyable.
