Having never seen an Imperial Stout on the menu at Barley John's before, I had to have a go at a half-pint while my wife was noshing through a pint of Old 8 Porter.
Pour arrives slick, black, & with a head that appears to have been painted on & falls with dignified slowness. Smell is foreshadowing: a little malt, sweet, not much going on. Huh.
This Imperial Stout is one of few disappointing beers I've had at the brewpub: it's just very...there. Tastes are very dull & washed out, sweet malt, bit of roast, nice & slick, almost like an oatmeal stout, but that might have been the highlight. I rushed through my half-pint so I could steal more Old 8 out of my wife's glass.
Not a bad beer, just one with a distinct lack of gumption. Very average.
