Looks like oil with a nice tan head sitting on top, that never goes away. Sweet smells of toffee, coffee and a tinge of hops let you know their in there. Taste is mostly the toffee and a nice balance of spicy hops. I could have a few of these and but it wouldn't be good for the drive home.

A - Silky black color with a small brown ring head. Minimal lacing.

S - Very light creamy malts, slightly bitter and a light hint of used coffee grounds and milk chocolate.

T - Creamy chocolate malts, very smooth but a light. Some coffee-like bitterness lingers in the background. Overall the taste was pretty light, I imagined this beer to be the template that all imperial stouts start with, just without the nuances or special flavors.

M - Consistency was very smooth and almost thick. Carbonation was minimal.

D - Overall I'm glad I got a chance to try this, and I'll probably have it again next time it comes around. Recommended, if you're here at the right time.

2003 Vintage. Originally reviewed on June 25, 2005. This really needed to be split from the original rating, because this age has suffered and was dragging down my score of the other. The 2003 vintage was "soyed" out. It had become a carbonationless, soy syrup, with little left of it’s original brightness and posterity. Nonetheless, it’s still a respectable brew, but aging hasn’t improved this one at all. Especially since it hasn’t sat in any special container. It just stewed, losing much of it’s special hop character and alcohol brightness. Extremely savory.

Very nice effort on this one..black colored...with a brownish/tan creamy head...looks the part....full bodied with a creamy mouthfeel...dark baking cocoa on the nose...taste is burnt malt, baking cocoa...finishes bitter with the dark cocoa and a piney hop hit as well..

Reminds me a little of Stone Imperial...top notch brew here..

First Public Release at Winterfest in St.Paul - Well worth it.
Color is super dark brown, nearly black with a small but thick cocoa brown head, spotty lacing. Aroma is quite chocolatey, more like a thick milk chocolate then dark. Creamy and pleasant with a fresh baked brownie chocolate sense. Taste is much nicer then what the smell leads on to be. Nice milk chocolate tones, creamy and long lasting, somewhat thick, but the lasting power is what I liked, the chocolate didn't want to stop, it just kept going and going. Yum! There's some light notes of coffee bittering and some dark caramel and molasses in there but the chocolate dominates. Very nice warmth too. Feel is silky smooth and creamy as hell, slides right down with a great light carbonation that fit for me. The drinkabilty was quite favorable, the creamyness was clean and super smooth. I swear it was like drinking very thick chocolate milk. Yum! Good stuff.
