Dark reddish hazelnut with average tan head that dissipates to almost nothing. A deep caramelly sweet bomb of a lager with more than a whiff of alcohol on it. Minimal hops, but with a nice clean finish. I've only dabbled in this style, but this one seems as good an example as any. The waiter was eager to inform me that it won the Silver medal for doppelbocks at the GABF this year.

On-tap last night at BockFest
A - Dark orange mahogany color. Eighth inch offwhite head. A few thin strips of lacing.
S - Green bitterness, rich caramel and some floury wheaty malts.
T - Lightly bitter and sweet with some muted caramel flavors. Finish leaves a slightly richer caramel flavor. Alcohol is well hidden.
M - Body is a little thin, medium carbonation.
D - Flavors weren't robust enough to be a very good doppelbock. Easy drinking though and I wouldn't have guessed 8.5% abv.

Originally reviewed March 14, 2005. Current year on tap at the brewpub. Dark deep black pour, with light brown soapy froth. Plain boring malty aroma. Extremely rich deep toasty malt with sweet nutty flavors. Alcohol is strong and stings the nose. A lite coffee and chocolate background in the finish. Theres a little wisp of port of brandy in the flavor complex. Aftertaste and smack is a little bit burnt and bitter.
Reviewed September 8, 2005. 2004 Vintage on tap at the brewpub. Light dark cherry aroma. Deep dark orange tinged translucency. Even oily off-white head. Canteloupe! Strong first note. Morphs into a slightly sherried, mroe bourboned, with a background of cherries. Tough to finger. Alcohol adds a spicy kick on the back end. Creamy lucious mouthfeel, with a real full feeling and a lot of body. Crisp finish. A nice level of complexity to this beer that keeps the tounge on task. More flavorful than most dopplebocks. A touch of abbey fruitcake and spiced orange. Lingers with a tinge of fresh spearmine. Wow. A year makes this beer fantastic!

Appearance: Brownish black color
Aroma: Big dark fruits on the nose(plums, and raisens)...brown sugar...molasses...rum...
Taste:Very sweet and malty...big impression again of the dark fruit and molasses/brown sugar....a bit of breadiness emerges too...Great taste...right up there with the best of the best..
Mouthfeel: From a growler that is about 10 days old...a little flatish but I won't deduct points due to the circumstances...on the high side of medium bodied...
Drinkability: Well I just polished off 20 ounces in about 5 minutes as I type this review....This growler will be had tonight as it is soo damn tasty and easy drinking too....borderline great doppel...much better than the last doppel I had from Fitger's(which was also very good)...wish they'd make this a regular....great stuff..and I should note the 8.5% is nowhere to be tasted....great stuff
