Munich Dunkel lager is one of the oldest Bavarian styles, dating back to the12th century. This style is the ancestor to nearly every modern lager style brewed today. It was the most common beer of the time, and it was dark in color because of the way malt was made at the time – there was really only one type of malt available.
It’s a perfect beer to show that dark doesn’t necessarily mean heavy. It drinks quite light, but with a slightly creamy mouthfeel and a medium body. The aroma brings big notes of Munich malt – toast, bread crust, a hint of nuttiness and a touch of toffee. Low in hops, the flavor is smooth brown maltiness, with a touch of darkly toasted crust and hint of German hops, while finishing semi-dry. This is a great dark beer for the warm weather.

From a crowler picked up at the brewery 10 days ago into a tulip. Thick dark brown, looks great with a thick and foamy head and good retention. Nose is bready malts, some faint clove or some other kind of earthy spice, maybe a little bakers chocolate (not very sweet), maybe a little nuttiness... taste pretty much follows. Not picking up too much in terms of the yeast, but enough to distinguish it from a brown ale or the like. Not too lively on the mouthful, but good full round flavors. Worth a shot...I enjoyed it.
