Poured a deep amber color with a thick head. Lots of aromas, a big meaty punch with lots of yeast in the background. Touches of oak, vanilla, and more meat. Big bold flavor, but not over the top. Very, very nicely balanced. Had this as soon as it went on and I'm glad, judging by the other review, this one went downhill fairly quickly. Still, Id have this again any time.

I had this during the Oktoberfest celebration at the brewery. it was served in a regular conical pint glass.

A - the beer had way too much head for a rauchbier, the colour was off white and there were at least two full fingers. dark brown colour, but nothing special. the beer really missed the mark for the appearance, it looked quite like a schwarz or some other kind of dark german lager.

S - barely any smoke in the nose, more of just a simple dark roasted malt flavour.

T - Rauch? I think not. this brew tasted hopier than it did smoky! the biggest part of the flavour profile was the lightly roasted malts, then the hops, then the piddly amount of smoke. the hops were way too agressive for the lack of body the malts were giving up, not to mention the distinct lack of any real smoke flavour.

MF&D - to be blunt: too carbonated, and not really that interesting or good of a beer. perhaps this was their first shot at the style, perhaps they will use more liquid smoke the next time.
