On cask, via gravity fed firkin, @ the Upland Tap Room (Bloomington, IN) on 6/4/10. Served in a pint glass.
Pours a deep murky brown, thin covering of slightly off-white head. This retains with a moderately rich soapy look, that leaves the sides of the glass dotted with some like spotty froth. Hops control the aroma up front, with lots of green citrus, pine, and floral character all being present. There are some underlying notes of sweet caramel and some toasted nuts present but the nose is pretty much all about the hops.
Once again, the hops take control in the taste, with green earthy citrus, spice, and sticky resins all adding both flavor and bitterness to this. There is some sweet malts activity underneath the hops, which then trails off into a roasty and nutty backend. Hops return for a finale of pine and bitter citrus which sticks and lingers on the palate. The mouthfeel is medium bodied overall but feels much lighter thanks to a mellow and easy presence from the cask conditioning. Just a quintessential cask feel that drinks like a champ here. I was quickly running out of liquid as I was reviewing this.
I'm a big fan of Nugget hops but the dry-hopping seemed a little overboard here, especially with the cask really bringing out all of that bold hop flavor. I would have liked to have a bit more of that Nut Brown character coming through. Still though, this was tasty enough and the drinkibility of this was fantastic on cask. Glad we visited here on a "Firkin Firday".
