The label is lovely again, and the beer is not so bad itself: dark mohagony with a steady cappucino head that leaves good retention. A full nose of chocolate, liquorice, coffee and pilsener hops. These flavours return in the taste, where the relatively high abv is pretty well hidden. The taste does get a bit bland after a while though. I love the smoothness of this beer, as well as its alcoholic warmth. Nice beer for winter evenings.

Pitch black pour, with a generous light tan head. The smell is pilsner-hoppy alongside dark chocolate and coffee. It has a fresh taste as well, with hoppy bitterness and cocoa, dark chocolate and coffee. There's also a metallic bitterness which I personally find not pleasing.

Head is fairly white for such a dark beer. Redness comes through the black body in the light. Nice lacing.

The aroma has some great sweet cocoa working.

More cocoa with some roast playing second fiddle.

Medium bodied and carbonated with a light bitterness. Works well for the beer.

Pretty good stuff.

A black beer with a steady big head.
Aroma of the beer is cacao and roasted malts.

The taste is remarkable soft for a beer that dark and that strong. Is has hints of liquorice and chocolate towards the end.

In the aftertast the liquorice has the overhand.

Less roasted that I would have thought being a Imperial Stout.

Worth to have a second one off.

Very dark brown in colour, almost black, with some red hues and a moderate and very sticky light-brown head.

The beer smells roasted, but not that much, and has some fruity notes (prune, raisin) and a touch of caramel shining through. There is a slightly sharp whiff of yeast and some hops as well.

There is some more bitterness to the taste, working together with a roasty quality and an enjoyable sour moment. The finish is clean and dry and reminds me of coffee and dark chocolate (according to SNAB's website, there is cacao in the recipe, but none such is mentioned on the label). Alcohol is hard to discover taste-wise, but it surely is having its effect.

Medium- to full-bodied with strong carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel with a slight sticky effect.

A complex and very enjoyable brew. Another good one from SNAB!

Bought on line almost a year ago. Time to enjoy it, as this one will be brewed no more.
Poors a dark blakish brown with a good off white creamy and frothy head. Like all stouts the appearance is great. I smell candy, roasted malt, coffee. The taste is on the sweet side, even if it's a little sour at the start. Finish is mild. Mouthfeel is not special but it's cosy and the alcool starts to feel present, but it's a good one to relax on...

Thanks Absumaster. Very darkish brown though not quite jet coal black. Some white head. Some roast in aroma. Grainy at first, cocoa powder and coconut and coffee and then a smooth chocolate cream beer. Mostly that as to a complex RIS.Some sugar though not overly sweet.

This beer has not been retired!

Appearance is black with an off-white head. Standard black beer looks.

Smell is mildly burned and an odd and slightly misplaced caramellic taste, but this beer is far from standard. The yeast appears English and gives the beer an English fruitiness. Some hoppy notes in the smell that come from the Challenger.

Taste is more aggresively burned than the smell, the chocolate and black malt combination is evident. On top of this, is the caramel sauce, and this makes the beer sweet and full-bodied. In general this beer comes across as being an English RIS, because of the fruity yeast and resinous and slight coarse hop profile. Mouthfeel is not as sweet as other RISs I had and this is nice for a change. Alcohol is a little warm.
A nice complex RIS from SNAB, cheers to these creative brewers!

Notes from the 2002 Kerstbierfestival, Essen, Belgium.

This beer was brewed on commission for SNAB following a recipe by Derek Walsh. SNAB = Stichting Noordhollandse Alternatief Bierbrouwers, or Foundation of Alternative Beer Brewers of Northern Netherlands. They basically create recipes then have small brewers brew 'em.

Opaque black. Thick, towering, off-white foam head with lots of stick and stay. Light malt aromas of chocolate and some yeast in the nose. Ample dose of coffee flavor. Sharp, crisp carbonation and leading bitterness that's cheesy and raw. The beer is dry with a distinct sour character. Astringent roasted flavors, old coffee and bitter chocolate towards the end. Dry yeasty finish. Dirt. Coarse.

Exquisite.
