Red Monk of Iona
500mL bottle, 4.2%, Produced a good cap of creamy white head and sticky lacing, good retention. Colour is a medium bronze brown. 4
Smell has a fresh fruity hoppy kick. Autumn apples, pine resin, gingerbread, some foresty earthy notes. A solid backing of caramel malts, some clove, not much citrus beyond some possible aged/dried lemon. More earthy spicy complexities. 4
Taste is malty and smooth, ginger oat spices, mild caramel, some earthy hops. A bit caramel sweet and honey to start then some more complex bitter notes come in. Plays nicely with flavours and complexities, the ginger caramel note I picked up was a bit unexpected. 3.75
Mouthfeel is light and pleasant, well balanced, mild zesty carbonation that is very soft and quite pleasing, malty caramel coating, finishes with dry malt that lingers off, some toffee and earthiness, not as crisp as it maybe could be. Very drinkable and refreshing. 3.75
A tasty amber that delivered some above par flavours, still working on melding them all together but this has a lot of promise and was a very enjoyable satisfying beer. Nice and pleasantly hoppy for the style. 4
