A 500ml bottle with a BB of April 2013. Gyle ppa12; bottle 278 of 500 - strictly limited! Picked up a while back from Trembling Madness in York. Brewed to celebrate the 2012 London Olympics.
Poured into a straight pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A golden-amber hue with faint haze and good carbonation. Forms a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a surface layer. Aroma of grainy caramel malt with hints of biscuits, earthy yeast, grass, hay and mild stewed hops.
Tastes of grainy caramel malt with a dry finish. Notes of grass, hay, earthy yeast and stewed hops. A restrained bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, though the body is perhaps a tad insubstantial. Mildly astringent, with an aftertaste of malt, stewed hops and yeast.
A drinkable pale ale but rather average. Can't really see why this was brewed for the Olympics - it doesn't stand out and some of Naylor's other beers are much better. The malt, hops and yeast are subtle and well-balanced, giving it a classic ale character. That said, it isn't very exciting. Decent but I doubt it would make the podium in a competition.
