A 500ml bottle with a BB of April 2013 (Gyle: yg723). Picked up recently from the York Wine & Beer shop. The label states that this blonde ale was brewed to celebrate the Yorkshire 2012 Olympic medal winners (7 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze). Could it also be a winner?
Poured into a straight pint glass. A hazy golden hue with plentiful carbonation. Produces a large head of creamy white foam with excellent retention; this slowly reduces to a thick surface layer. Nice lacing - this brew looks simply perfect. Aroma of grainy malt and floral hops with notes of grass, cannabis resin, faint herb essences, mild biscuits, earthy yeast and stewed hops. Slightly nutty - delicious.
Tastes of light, grainy malt with a subtle hoppy character and a dry finish. Notes of grass/hay, cannabis, nuttiness, biscuits, earthy yeast esters and stewed hops. Well attenuated, with a mild, dry bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with pleasant carbonation and superb body for the style. Slightly astringent, with an aftertaste of grassy floral hops, faint grain and earthy yeast.
Very nice - this is what the perfect English pale ale should taste like. The aroma and flavour are replete with notes of grainy malt, grassy hops and yeast; all beautifully harmonised. The cannabis hints add interest - I wonder what they used to achieve that? Perhaps this Olympic brew is doped. Lovely to drink, and I can imagine it going down nicely on a warm day. Too bad this is a one-off, but it demonstrates Naylor's class as a brewery. If you should chance across one, snap it up!
