On tap at the brewpub. Served in a Town Hall chalice glass.

Appearance: Color is a very hazy golden orange. Lots of bubbles and a big three finger off white head which slowly fades. Leaves a good amount of lacing.

Smell: A fairly sweet and tart barrel forward aroma. Big upfront barrel presence with hints of oak and wood. Red wine hints of sour and tart grapes along with some hints of vinegar and tannins. Also some hints of cherry, apple, and lemon. Sweet hints of honey and candied sugar. Malt and wheat with hints of grains, straw, yeast, caramel, and cracker. Scent of booze is noticeable as well. A pretty good aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a sweet, tart, and fairly boozy wine barrel forward taste. Big barrel presence with upfront notes of oak and wood. Red wine tasting notes of sour grapes with some tannin, vinegar, and acidic notes. Fruit notes of apple, cherry, and slight lemon. Sweet notes of honey from the base beer along with some light candied sugar. Pale malt with notes of grains, wheat, straw, caramel, cracker, and yeast. A pretty solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Tart, juicy, and fairly drying on the finish. Some booze heat is felt but its still fairly smooth.

Overall: A pretty good wine aged brew. The tart and acidic red wine notes blend well with the sweetness of the base honey ale.

Large off white head. Color is a hazed burnt copper gold.

Flavor profile: very complex. Tons of wine flavors. A lot of grapes and tannins. Apple cider vinegar. Honey. Oak. Lemon tartness. Some caramel malt mixed in with some candied sugar.

Mouthfeel: a bit of tartness, but overall smooth. Medium bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall, a very fine beer. I like how much the wine showed in this beer. Very drinkable. I could have a lot of this!

(Re-review 5/11/18, original score 4.75)

Look: gold, small head but adequate lacing for a barrel-aged beer. Aroma: mead, metheglin, lavender, roses, crysanthemum, all imposed over artisan honey. Taste: mead but drier than the aroma, more flower bed, some oak tannins in the background. Finish: brief honey sweetness with some light but lingering oak. Mouthfeel: full bodied cut by high carbonation. Comments: my first impressions were correct. This is a fantastic beer in all its meadiness.
