Imperial Stout aged to perfection in whiskey barrels. Removed and aged on dark chocolate...then nitrogenated to extra silky smooth goodness!

750ML growler that a buddy (off-line…yes, it’s still out there) handed me recently. Only had it on tap & always look forward to everything Town Hall tosses in a barrel. Or a stout. Or anything, really. Split with my wife.

Nice hiss upon twisting – always a good sign. Black, slight head. Smells like cocoa with a bit of roast. Barrel strangely absent. My tongue is apprehensive.

Tennessee Desert is messing with my tastes buds – it tastes like honest-to-goodness chocolate. Not cocoa power or baking chocolate or nougat or whatever abomination they make white chocolate Herschey’s out of. Straight up chocolate with roast along the edges. The vanilla comes roaring in mid-palate with some nuttiness, nougat, & toffee. The barrel is waltzing along somewhere else, because it isn’t here – I recall it being strong & fit in previous incarnations. A touch thin; but since I’m a three-a-day chocolate addict, I could easily down plenty of this.

Nice beer, but the missing whiskey is a bummer & judging by other reviews & reactions, I might have gotten the lamed turtle. Still a very good beer.

Had this on tap at the Taproom.

A: Pours jet black in color with a 1.5 inch, frothy, khaki colored head with good retention. Thick, billowy khaki lacing throughout.

S: Big aromas of dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, toffee, raisins, whiskey barrel, cherries, and other dark fruits.

T: Starts of with rich, dark chocolate fudge and coffee followed by vanilla, caramel, and toffee. Finishes with notes of dark fruits, a nice amount of whiskey barrel character, and very mild bitter coffee notes.

F: Full bodied. A little thin in my opinion, but very smooth. Light carbonation.

O: Overall, this is a good BA Imperial stout. Nice flavor profile and barrel character is at a good level. Chocolate notes are definitely present in this one. A little thin for my liking, especially given prior tastes of regular Czar Jack, but still good on other aspects. Would definitely try this one again.

My 250th THB beer!

Tan head with lace. Motor oil black.

The Belgian dark chocolate shows so much here. There is almost a raspberry/dark cherry flavor going on. Cocoa and vanilla also show. Oaky with jack Daniel whiskey present. Rich and smooth. Very faint roasted malts. Figs, plums, molasses.

Full bodied. Smooth and light roasted.

Awesome stout and happy to have finally have tried this variant of Czar Jack with Belgian chocolate, cocoa nibs, and vanilla.

Enjoyed at the 2015 MN ABR

Poured a rich mahogany with a caramel-colored creamy foam that thickly coated the sides of the 2-oz tasting glass. Smelled of dark chocolate and coffee, toffee, caramel. Taste was German chocolate cake with coffee, toffee elements, a hint of vanilla and possibly what I think is cherry but wow it's balanced enough to be lightly sweet but not overpoweringly sugary at all. Heavy body with a velvety mouthfeel. Medium carb. Some warmth is definitely noticeable but expected in this beast. This one struck me as an awesome sipper, delicious, will seek it out.
