This was really a great beer. I'd never tasted the "California Common" style before, but it appeared to be somewhat simliar to an American Pale Ale, but with a darker hue, and maybe a little sweeter, heavier body.

Beautiful, rich color. Quite bitter, actually, and a little spicy on the first sip. Nice caramel notes and a sugary sweetness in the mouth and a pretty dry finish. I thought there was exceptional balance in this beer. Wonderfully bitter and yummily sweet.

On cask at the brewpub...

Dark gold, nice downward cascading carbonation for about 45 seconds. Flat and very creamy head, sits solid at 1/2 an inch on top of the beer. Thick sheets of complicated and very attractive lace. Full sniff reveals a bit of caramel with a touch of a buttery tone. Lightish mouthfeel, but well-aided by the cask serving. A quick sense of brown sugar and a very light diacetyl with vanilla, nicely matched by an equal if understated hop, leafy and vaguely balsamic. Nice mixture of these balancing effects at the close and in the aftertaste. Very good beer, very drinkable and well-executed. The cask serving style works surprisingly well with this brew.

Clear brassy copper stacked with a mound of dirty snow.
Toasty in the nose, with walnut skins, burnt caramel, and bread dough, as well as a secondary hop note of lime leaves and woody stems.
Begins with an essence of grilled sweetdough. Like a warm cinnamon rolls...without the cinnamon. Migrates drier with almonds and peanut skins, and grain husk, and earthiness. More yeast-induced dough in the middle, along with a minor apricot fruitiness. Concludes with a hop slap of green grass, spruce, and lime rinds.
A taut medium-light body with equally taut carbonation makes-and keeps- this drinkable, well, actually gulpable.
Just entirely sessionable, sociable, and generally tasty.

Huge, I said that I wanted to try a steam beer that wowwed me. This delivers the good. Thanks.

On-tap at the brewpub: Dark to medium gold color with a cold, dark, firm, whitish head of small heft. Light lacing qualities.

Aroma is of sweet smokey malts. Not as in smokey, the actual smoke, but more alluring and wavering like. Tender malts lend a sweet touch of toasted breads and lightly earthy yeastiness adding some musty grainyness.

Flavors are quite the effect of long standing standard pale malt sweetness of breads and grain with a light smear of earthy smoke. Tender crisp toastyness wrapped within. Partial honey candy mixed with toffee/caramel dart an underplay inbetween the toasty bready factions. Crisp and buttered corn sweetness comes in as a mixture once its warmed up some. Flavorful yet simple and dignified without much complexity but lasts with an intreguing balance.

Feel is about right for the style, medium heft with a malt sided lean in the sweets and breads with just the tinyest hop spice of grasses. Crisp, clean, sweet, and simple. And drinkable; nothing out of the norm for a Town Hall brew. Always drinkable.

Crystal clear pure copper appearance. Thin nicotine stained white head. Lace is quite pleasing. It comes in rings. Nose is very solid. Crisp maltiness. Slight toasted feel to it. Some caramel as well. And a fresh yeastiness that has great character to it. There's a lot more of the same on the buds. The yeast character is fantastic. Very clean yet flavorful. Malts give a honeyed, caramelized feel to the beer with some slight toasted notes in the background. Hops add some balance, slight bitterness and just a bit of dryness on the finish. Fruitiness (honeydew, cantaloupe, maybe pear), while present, is held in check by the domineering malt and yeast properties. Body is nice and round...about medium-full.

This beer is fucking smokin'!!! I mean steamin'!!!

This is what all CA Common beers should strive to be. Clean, flavorful and downable by the buckets...

Good work Jeff.

Had a pint at the pub during the dollar hour, enjoy now through the miracle of growlers...

Clear amber/ near copper color, big, burly, creamy-toned head...nice, nice...

Aroma: soft, sweet, lightly spicy, malt-inflected, above all, lively and invigorating...

Taste: ultra-smooth, grainy, malt-dominant, some hops, but just enough to deliver flavor...light-bodied, easy drinkability...laughably easy! A very sweet thing, in the flavor, with tangy hop presence...very nice!
This fully encaptures the style set, and sealed, by Anchor, the Steam beer...the ease of drinking, the smooth/lightness of a lager, with the distinctive character and taste of an ale.

Nailed it again, Hoops and Crew...good job!
