served on nitro at the brewery, this is a total winner. i am still waiting to have a beer from these guys that is anything less than fully exceptional, but it looks like that may never happen. matte black and creamy as can be from the nitro tap, deep froth holding in an aroma of nearly burnt black barley and good espresso, toasted marshmallow, and extinguished campfire. its not as sweet as a lot of these are, like the lactose does more of a creamy feel thing than it does a sugary flavor, and i appreciate that immensely. nice complexity in the malt with a deep dark chocolate vein, a little licorice even, and a wintery roast, hearty and heavy like it should be. so smooth to drink on for how robust it all is, the nitro and the lactose really help soften it, and it has a great glide as i drink it down. pretty quick finish for what it is too, its dry on the swallow despite the lactose and the layers of flavor this brings. i could see this being amazing with a good coffee addition, or even with some wintery mulling spices for the holidays. a brilliant base stout, the model for the style really...
