Honey Oak Wee Heavy

So, I've had TH's wee heavy, and it was great. But this, its damn near perfect. Aged 7-ish months in a American honey white oak, or something like that.

Into a curvy 8 oz. glass, pours a dark chestnut brown (really, it was getting dark, hard to define), with little head upon arrival, but more beer, so I was ok with that. Not much lacing, but like I was paying attention to that. The aroma is fantastic, whole bunches of thick malty goodness, very unsubtle rum alcoholic notes (yum yum), a bit peaty perhaps, some other floral characteristics that were hard to define when sampled outside.

But while the aroma was delicious, the taste was divine. Thick, hefty malt body, creamy to the touch and warm to the soul. Its a treat and lets you know it. Mountains of malts come in chocolates, some peat, there is a definite earthiness that keeps this beer for real. The rum alcohol stops flirting about and gives you a hearty slap on the back, with a faint oaken aura about it. The mouth as I said was thick, warm, creamy, fantastic. In all, its a lot to handle, but a superb beer, a definite treat.

Served in a goblet.

Served with 1/2 finger of beige head. Leaves some lace. Color is a caramel brown.

Aroma: A lot like the regular scotch ale. Caramel and chocolate malt with some roast. It has the sweetness from the honey and wine. Some oak shows with a bit of vanilla.

Taste: A lot of the wine shows here. Grapes, oak, and vanilla. Sweet honey, caramel, and chocolate malt. Sweet and warm.

Mouthfeel: Fizzy, warming, and sweet. Medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends dry with a bit of smoked malts.

Overall, a really well done scotch ale. Good choice of barrels used on this one. The honey works well with the base beer. Nice drinkability as well.

Draft. Pours a dark brown with a slight red tinge. Nice 1 finger bead. Malty, Biscuity, sweet aroma with a touch of vanilla and alcohol. Medium mouthfeel. Peaty, smokey, sweet dark fruit and honey flavors abound in the taste. Pretty sweet but in a good way. Apples flavors as well. Scottish/Irish whiskey notes. Sweet honey with smokey finish.

Had this on-tap on 7/24/06. The waitress said this was the last keg and that it has been aging 8 months longer than the last time it was offered. All I can say is that I was luckier than hell to get some of this. Unique and amazing. 10 oz. glass that showed a dark, chocolatey brown body with a small, light brown head. Nose was oaky, chocolatey, smoky, and peaty, but with a sweet, floral, honey edge. Wow. The taste follows suit, with mellow, aged, oaky maltiness. Smoky and peaty with sweetish ambrosia and honey notes. Slightly warming and amazingly smooth. Full body with light, smooth carbonation. Velvety. Damn lucky to get a chance to try this!

Near perfection with this one...

Dark blackish brown color..awesome woody aroma...first impression it smells like oad (no shit?)....also some sublte smokey peatiness...

Taste is sweet sticky maltiness...hints of wood, smoke, and dark cocoa..

Mouthfeel is full and smooth...rounded...creamy almost...

Great shit...very unique nose...great flvors...feels right...Mike hit big on this one....damn near a 5.0..

Dark burgandy tone. Thin light chocolate head. Adequate levels of lace. Nice nose. First and foremost come the Wee Heavy characteristics. The big meaty maltiness. The slight smokiness. The rum like alcholic note. Good stuff. But there's a little sweet, crisp honey and some barrel qualities as well. Creamy, velvety feel in the mouth. Body is a little better than medium. The flavor profile is just soooo smooth. This could be a dangerous one 'cuz you could lose track in a hurry. The malts are thick and meaty. Yeast adds a touch of fruitiness. Chocolate comes to mind as well. Barrel aging adds some slight winey notes. This beer is quite sweet, but never even close to cloying. It's quite the gem and one helluvan experiment.
