Bars like this are difficult to find and are disappearing. A legendary local bar that has been coined "A Schell's Bar" and I wouldn't differ with that. Directly on German St. There's diagonal street parking and some weird lots around the back, has a long full bar with loads of Schell's taps & some specialties in zie coolah. Trad American/German/Bavarian themes and lots of locals go there. The men's washroom is incredibly tiny and worthy of a chuckle. Extremely friendly bartender& waitress when I was there 1st then the next time there I played drums with a polka band and the place was packed. With it's close proximity to Mankato, lots of college students around Oktoberfest. In beautiful pristine farm country. New Ulm is a famous wknd getaway for a lot of city folk as it has gorgeous bed & breakfast mansions and a rich history in MN. Stay for a couple of days if you can. Soak it in. Tour the Schell's brewery and go to the B & L.

Founded in 1897, it still has the original tin ceiling and bar back. Open with lots of seating and a huge bar.
There are a dozen taps dedicated to Schell's, including a couple of Noble Star selections and the latest Cave Aged beer.
The service was fast and friendly and included a nice chat with one of the owners.
Great place.
We did not have any food.

The place to stop if you want to try something from Schell's. It's almost a guarantee they will have it.

My wife and I attended a Schell's beer tasting party on a Friday night (Anniversary beer #7) and was very impressed by this place.

The taps are set up in two locations, one having normal beers on tap (lights, Blue Moon, etc), while the second set of taps consist of all Schell's beer selections. On this night it consisted of: Original, Light, Dark, Maifest, Hefeweizen, Roggenbier (Anniversary beer #7), Pilsner, Stout and Firebrick.

I stuck with the Roggenbier and was not disappointed (I did sneak in one Schell's Zommerfest from a bottle). Jeff, one of the owners, greated my wife and I and we felt like locals right away. We spent the night talking to Schell's assistant brewmaster who actually created the beer that we were drinking. How cool is that?

The next time you are in New Ulm, stop by, you will love it!

Stopped in at the B & L last night (Tuesday) for a beer with a buddy and I was pretty impressed for a New Ulm bar. If you like Schells, then this is the place to go. They have all the current and seasonals on tap plus they have a bunch of bottles.

The bar is a cool looking place. It kind of has a German look to it. Not really old-fashioned but nothing modernized. Very cool looking place and decorated with a bunch of Schells stuff.

I got a hefeweizen and it was poured into the proper glassware which was a plus. Besides the selection of Schells, they don't have too much else to offer.

Service was pretty good. Once Jeff wasn't busy he came over and chatted with me and my buddy and we weren't even sitting at the bar. This was a big plus.

Overall, if you are in the area, I think this is a definite place to check out!

I love the B & L (which locals will tell stands for either Beautiful Lounge or Braggers and Liars) it is an oasis in the southern part of Minnesota. New Ulmers range from Schell lovers, micro drinkers and unfortunately lots of Mich Golden Light drinkers. This bar is the happening place whenever there is a festival in town. They carry all of the Schell beers as long as they are in season. Not tons of breweriana on the walls, but what is there is cool. Food is mainly just frozen pizza, but it's very good frozen pizza. Jeff and Rick are real promoters and know how to run a good bar. Prices are slighty higher than what we are used to here in Northern Iowa and perhaps some of the other New Ulm bars too, but they have the selection, atmosphere and quality so it's worth it. We live 90 miles away and many consider us to be regulars in this place. A must stop bar in New Ulm.

On my first real trip to the middle of now where Minnesota I new I had to stop in New Ulm to find a Shell's beer. It so happened that one of the people I was meeting for work lives in New Ulm and he said this was the place to go. The locals refer to it as Deer brand beer this place has plenty of them on tap.

The atmosphere is very nice with the exposed brick walls, big wooden/mirrored bar and old pictures of Shells on the walls. They said that about 6 months ago it was an "old man's" bar for drunks but Jeff the new owner and one of the bartenders really turned the place around. It was very active with all ages the Thursday night we visited. It is an oasis in the middle of some very rural areas. However New Ulm is all things German and B & L has some Old World charm aswell.

The beer was served at a good temp and they had several different glass styles for different seasonals. It seemed like good quality.

Jeff was our server and he was very nice and social when he wasn't running around taking orders. The other staff seemed friendly and could describe the seasonals styles with one or two sentences.

They have a good selection on tap with lots of Schell’s and a Boulevard from Kansas and Moose Drool from Montana. They also had a few BMC and some imports. What was not seasonal they had in bottles and a good selection of the typical imports with a dozen malternatives. They sell carry-out if you get there in liquor store hours and I got a great 12-bottle sampler to take home. They have a full bar with some Louis 14th cognac if you like aswell.

The food looked like good bar food, pizza was all I saw. However there is free popcorn and pickles if you need snacks while you are drinking.

This was a wonderful neighborhood bar that I would visit whenever I get back that way.
