WOW!!! This is one kickass brew from a mostly average brewery. I found this one on a whim that brought me to Southend. Thank you God for gettin' me there. I really have no idea why I went there, cause last time I went there, their beer selection was the same run of the mill crap. This one suprised the total hell out of me.
The appearance was very nice, with it's super dark color that allowed no light through, and it's super thick tan head. The head lasted the whole entire drink, as well as was the only thing left in the glass when I finished. The smell was of malts and almonds. The almond smell was just right, in that it wasn't overbearing, which can make one nautious. The taste was very similar to the smell. One thing that I noted in the taste, was that the aftertaste had no burning hop taste like most Stouts. This one was truely set apart from any other stout I have ever had. The only reason I didn't give the drinkability a 5.0, was that this brew filled you up very quickly, so it was hard to drink more than one.
Once again, I am truely amazed by the direction this company is going in, with the "specialty" brews. Most chains like this are satisfied with their nasty basic crap, which is sad. Thank God some chains are willing to go for the gold and broaden their horizens.
