My favorite of the night hands down This was actually a good beer. Deep dark brown pour with a nice inch of tan head on top. Slow fade left behind a minmal head but some decent side glass lacing. The aroma was rich with roasted malts, hints of molasses and burnt caramel and a touch of a smoke like note as well. Even feel here with a lighter side of dull but still nice feel on it. The flavor came through nicely balanced with a rich profile that was not over the top and a mellow finish that really hit the spot. I actually ordered another pint of this one as I really did enjoy it.

A: Black with a small brown bubbly head. Average lacing. Looks a little too carbonated for this style.
S: Roasted malt dominates. A hint of hop and coffee bitterness as well.
T: Roasted malt and slight coffee up front, but then it has a weird bitterness that follows. Seems like they missed or messed up on something. It was served pretty damn cold too which was unfortunate, but as it warmed all I got was a little more chocolate flavor.
M: Very thin for a oatmeal stout and highly carbonated. Way off the mark here.
D: Hard to be drinkable when it has too many faults to it.

Good, lasting beige head that leaves light spots on the glass. Dark brown where no light can pass through.
Mild nut aroma; no burnt malts, surprisingly.
The flavor has a strong black patent malt profile--some burnt toast and black coffee notes. No notable hop bitterness. The carbonation is very high for this style of beer. This is exasperated with the thinner body. Overall, good taste, bad (watery) mouthfeel.

A: Pours a dark brown, almost black. A two finger tan head forms and takes a minute to recede. Rings of sticky lace are left after each sip.
S: Plenty of roasted malt. Some chocolate, coffee, and toffee. A bit of smoke. This has a nice rich aroma.
T: Follows the nose. Lots of roasted malt. Sweet chocolate and coffee. Smoke and a hint of oats as the flavor lingers.
M/D: A medium body with good carbonation. A bit watery though. Very easy and smooth to drink. Something I can session with no problem.
The best of the three Southend beers that I tried. This was really good, and something to look for when visiting.

This was the only beer of the 8 samples they brought out that I could see myself drinking agin. With that being said, I wouldn't want to. The flavor was very muted and served too cold. After warming up. A little more dark roasted aroma woke up but still weak on the nose. The body of the "stout" was extremely thin and bubbly. Was not creamy at all like oatmeal and milk stouts are made to be. Very easy to drink because of the light flavor and thin body but was utterly dissapointing.

Draft pint at the Charleston brewpub. Its black, but theres no body (a trend here) and no head. It emits a decent enough roasty aroma and at least theres some decent stout-y, roasty flavors here but nothing to bolster the decent taste. Bummer. (#2813, 4/22/2007)

this was a nice place and a nice beer I was a little disappointed as to how thin this beer was, the mouthfeel was not good it was thin and had litte carbonation. the taste was very much coffee and malt. it smelled good matched the flavor and it was dark in the resuraunt so I couldn't really see the beer butit looked black with a bit of a red hue to it but I'm not sure.

Thought I'd try the Stout while I was here also. It had a black with brownish reddish color, little head, left minimal lace. It smelled like roasted chocolatey malts, but the taste was very bland. It had a hint of chocolate and roasted malts but very light. Not a heavy Stout at all

Southends best available. Deep brown to black, wafer thin head. Smooth body on the fuller side of medium. Lots of roasted barley character. Decent Oatmeal stout.
