341 ml bottle served at cellar temperature into a pint glass. Thanks to Kevin and Claudia for the gift.
Appearance - Pours a very dark brown nearly black colored beer. Not much in the way of tan head, it dissolves quickly. Some small wisps of former head linger. Too dark too see much through the beer.
Smell - Impressive coffee notes, some faint smoke and a brown sugar and molasses combo that is quite nice. Hints of black licorice too. Complex and very good smelling.
Taste - Smooth and mildly roasty although sweeter than many a porter. Flavors are a bit of coffee, some sweet roasted grain with a treacle and molasses back and just a smidgen of licorice. Taste is just a bit thin compared with other great porters.
Mouthfeel - Smooth, lowish carbonation and thin body, with just enough heft to make it interesting.
Overall - A better than expected porter, Dark Beacon porter is one that I would look into buying on a semi-regular basis on two conditions, it was readily available at the LCBO and that it was reasonably priced. Still a worthy offering if in the Niagara area.
