12oz bottle; served in pint glass

L: dark brown and opaque; small, quick dissipating head; no lacing; definitely no mustache

S: deep coffee/chocolate you typically get from a porter; not really getting the vanilla

T: smoke and perhaps some vanilla; the back end gets away and has an unpleasant-to-me finish even though this is where the vanilla comes in

M: watery and none of the chewiness i enjoy in a porter or the creaminess the bottle advertises

O: one of the few beers i didn't enjoy much;

I picked up a bottle of Round Barn's Vanilla Stache for $2,89 at The Lager Mill. I'm in the mood for a Porter tonight and I'm interested to see what Round Barn can do with this style, so lets see how it goes. 2016 Vintage. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a imperial pint glass.

A- The label looks ok, it's goes ok with the name, but it's not too eye catching. It poured a dark brown color that took on more of brown and mahogany color when held to the light with half a fingers worth of tan head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and it left some spotty lacing behind. This is a decent looking beer, but I was hoping it would be a little darker with better head.

S- The aroma starts off with a lower amount of high sweetness with a smokey aroma being the first to show up and it goes into a little bit of an English Ale yeast like aroma. Up next comes the malts which impart a roasted malt, grainy, watery malts and caramel aromas. Towards the end comes the vanilla which is a little on the lighter side, but it's noticeable and it's followed by a little more sweetness. This beer just has an ok aroma, the porter base is average and the vanilla could be a little more noticeable.

T- The taste seems to be pretty similar to the aroma and it starts off with a lower amount of high sweetness with that same smokey aspect still being the first to show up and it goes into the english ale yeast which shows up a little more than it did in the aroma. Up next comes the malts which imparts all the same aspects that they did in the aroma. On the finish comes the vanilla which shows up as much as it did in the aroma and it's followed by a little more sweetness. This is just an ok tasting beer, the porter base is a little bland and watery and the sweetness is too high.

M- Not the smoothest, a little cloying, a little sticky, a little crisp, medium bodied with a lower amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is decent, but I wish it was smoother and not a little cloying.

Overall I thought this beer was just ok and I thought it was average at best for the style, it seemed to be rough around the edges in just about every aspect and it wasn't too memorable. This beer didn't have good drinkability, one is more than enough for me. What I like the most about this beer is the appearance and mouthfeel, they are the highlights of this beer. What I like the least about this beer is the taste and drinkability, they aren't that great and they need some work. I don't think I would buy this beer again and I can't say I would recommend it. All in all I wasn't impressed with this one and it seems to be a theme for this brewery for me. It's not a favorite Round Barn beer and it's average at best for the style. Better luck next time guys, this one could use some work.
