Got this one from the Duvel Guy in Utrecht
From a bottle into a snifter
EBC: 45
EBU: 60
26.5*P
APPEARANCE: Pours a 1 finger, medium looking, semi-creamy off-white head with decent retention. Opaque maroon red in color with no carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a half wisp and clings to the glass a bit. A splotchy wisp remains leaving touches of lacing.
SMELL: Wood, oak, sweet sugary rum aromas, caramel and toffee, and a good dose of alcohol. Bold and aromatic, with plenty of rum and sugary characteristics.
TASTE: Sugary rum, candy sweetness, toffee, caramel and alcohol up front. Boozy at the swallow with a good dose of oak, vanilla and cream, toffee, sugary rum and cotton candy lingering on the palate. Boozy, sugary and rather sweet for sure, but plenty going on.
PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Semi-creamy on the palate, goes down with a bit of a burn and finishes mouth-coating. Some decent heat lingers.
OVERALL: Good stuff, but the sugary sweetness of the run barrels is perhaps a touch too prevalent here. This is certainly well done and well executed, with a solid base barely wine supporting the barrel heavy character of this one, but the sugary, sweet rum quality of the barrels is perhaps a bit too much when matched with a sweet, higher FG beer like a barley wine. A bourbon, whisky or cognac barrel might have been more up my alley, here. Still, these white label brews are always quality and this one is no exception. If you’re up for a sugary sweet, barrel aged barley wine, this is more than a fine example and will be well worth your effort.
