poured into a tulip

I think i had a beer that went at my local liquor store for $2.50 and the store i located near the reviewer below me.
worst beer i have ever had...drain pour...not worth any more of my time to review tastes sour. not even close to what a dubbel should taste like...



trying to fill the 250 spaces required
should not be called a beer...

Presentation: It was poured from a brown 1pint 6oz bottle into an Otter Creek glass. That came as part of a three pack gift set. The bottle itself has no freshness date or abv% on the label but it has a nice description of the beer.

Appearance: It pours a dark murky brown color and in the glass there are deep crimson highlights when held up to the light. On top sits a tall beige head which is slow fading and long lasting with good splotchy lacing.

Smell: The aroma is very sweet overall and full of candy like notes, dark sweet malts and fruity yeast. There are absolutely no hop notes at all.

Taste/Palate: The flavor has loads of sweet malt and dark candied sugar notes up front. There are also some tart, fruity, cherry, and raspberry notes, with chocolatey maltiness. As it warms, this tartness seems to emerge stronger. On the finish I get more of the tart, cherry-like notes, along with some dry yeast and dry earthy hops which add some mild bitterness as well.

Notes: A very nice and interesting, tart and sour beer which is way out of the Dubbel style. This beer reminds me more of a sour brown ale.

Murky milky brown with a thick inch-high head of light brown dimpled foam that slowly settles and leaves curly legs of lace rising up.

Aroma of dark malt, toffee, fig, clove, band-aid and bready yeast.

Slghtly muted flavor of banana bread, phenols, ripe plum, peppery spice, clove, and some yeasty funk. I would like this more if there were more rich maltiness and less phenols and clove.

Moderate mouthfeel, tending toward slick.

Average drinkability, not my fave from OC.

Deep amber beer with candied sugar highlights. The head starts out slow but catches up towards the top of the glass with a steamed light cappuccino colored fluffy head.

Scent is tart yet has a nice subtle fruity spiciness. Sliced red apples dipped in peppered cinnamon. There is even a little chocolate covered cherry scents in there. Nice, complex and intriguing.

The taste has a lot of the same features as the nose but unfortunately succumbs to a slightly processed taste. Sweet and tart with the taste leaning more towards a molasses, candied flavor rather then a chocolate. A gritty stale grain flavor appears in the middle of the flavor but is thankfully eclipsed by a baked apple finish.

Medium bodied and smooth but still missing something. I kind of feel that the carbonation mixed with the hints of stale grain/beer flavor really takes away from the feel. It ends up with a calloused yet watery feel that leans more towards rough then pleasant. Ok brew but one that's favor fades fast. Looks ok, smells good but then it starts to slip.

Bomber from Whole Foods for a good price, into New Belgium glass.

Is this supposed to be a little sour and tart? What I'm tasting taste like an Oud Bruin.

Rasberries, cranberries, blackberries, sour cherries. Some brown ale-like sweetness but surprisedly not much caramel. Some wet wood flavours. Off-putting aftertaste.

I have to count off given the bottle and their website make no mention of sour/tartness or a wild yeast. It feels good at some points but overall doesn't seem intentional...

I can't fully make up my mind...this just tastes kinda off

A: Deep red with a head that forms well, but recedes very quickly and without much pizazz. If the head were any thinner, it would likely look more like a cola.

S: Sugary malts and grape. It's quite sweet, with an almost wine-like character to it.

T: Grapes are much stronger on the palate than the nose, with a sour note to it. My brother-in-law makes a drink that he calls his 'Chronic Tonic' and it's a blend of cider vinegar, grape juice, and a water dilution. This is quite similar, but sweeter - more of a grape juice flavour.

M + D: Body is quite thin... it has a little bit of the sparkle that I enjoy in a dubbel, but it's not really all that rich. I don't detect much alcohol heat, so I imagine this isn't particularly strong. Not the most enjoyable beer, and perhaps the first time I've had anything that I felt disappointed in from Otter Creek. Unfortunate, but it happens sometimes, I suppose!

Had this on tap at two locations in Middlebury, Vermont - Two Brothers Tavern and Waybury Inn.

Both experiences were consistent - a great dark opaque beer, with a nice light nose. The beer was not watery but not overly heavy in the mouth either.

I love the taste - a great malty brew with an almost raisiny flavor overtone. Not your typical Dubbel but not necessarily out of bounds for the style either.

Recommended. Also tried in bottle, to consistent results.

Pours a really nice mahogany with a thick tan one finger head. Good lacing too.
Smells of cherries, chocolate, and a bit of smoke but not overly fragrant.
The cherry is present up front out of the glass with tangy carbonation. Sour comes up after a little time but I suppose the dryness and cherries add to the sour attitude. After it breathes in the glass I'm getting more spice and less cherry but still not an overly complex beer.
I'm not a big fan of Otter Creek but will drink most of their offerings. This is not a dubbel, it's a decent beer on par with other Otter Creek offerings. Probably wont go back for another but no big complaints.

Appears a dark chestnut toned brown with a small, off white head. Tiny streaks of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of raisins, prunes, caramel, cherries, vanilla, and wood.
Taste is of overkill caramel(120, and/or Special B), tart cherries, and ripe fruit.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, sugary, with grapes lingering.

Picked up a 22oz bottle and poured it into my Chimay goblet. The color is a dark, reddish brown. Leaves a moderate foamy head with a thick ring around the glass. The first thing I smell is sweet malt. Smells a little chocolately and the alcohol is noticable. Some mild fruit tones. As with the smell, the taste is sweet and malty, although the taste isn't as strong as the aroma. A mild bitter tartness is there as well. Medium to full body mouthfeel with mild carbonation. Feels silky smooth going down. I'd drink this again.

Dark caramel color. Thin, off-white head quickly fades into thin skim retention but leaves nice surf splash lacing.

Smells like port and vinegar, rust and vinous grapes. Eew.

Sour metallic up front with a sweaty handfull of nickels in back. Watery mouthfeel and cloying metallic aftertaste. Eew.

Overall, Otter Dubbel is terrible. I bought it fresh and cellared it properly, but when I split the bottle with a friend neither of us could finish our glasses and the rest of the bottle went down the drain. Otter Creek, I love you, but I'm just not sure who you are anymore.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into an imperial pint glass.

A: The beer is a medium brown color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is a little estery and contains caramelized malts, dark fruit, Belgian yeast, some spice and a touch of hops.

T: The taste is sweet up front with some flavors of caramel, chocolate and dark fruits. Then there are some complementary flavors of Belgian yeast and a little sourness that creep in. The malt character is hearty but not too heavy and there's a mild hops presence that bring a little balance. The after-taste is slightly sour.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

D: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, decent representation of style, this one seems to try to combine different aspects of a few separate Belgian styles, it's a not bad beer but there are other Belgian-style beers that I would choose first.

<Revisited 9/15/09 - Phew, same tartness, but even more so.>

22oz bottle purchased as a single from Julio's, Westboro, MA.

Poured into a large glass chalice, formed a 1/2" tan head over the somewhat cloudy red brew. Head lasts well, with plenty of rejuvenation via streaming tiny bubbles from below, with thick lasting lace. Aroma is sweet and tart. Taste starts sweet, then gets taken over by a tartness that lasts right on through to the swallow. Not sure if we wanted the wild character here, but if not, it has crashed the party. Mouthfeel is smooth even with the tartness, and drinkability as well can overcome the flavor concerns. Could be a good brew, just maybe a bit off from their intention.

<Interesting that the tap reviews are very good, but the bottle reviews so far all note the tartness.>

Poured a deeper brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of chocolate, dark fruits, and yeast. Tastes of dark fruits (tart cherries), grapes, and caramel. Tart start and tart finish - I don't know if I liked that or not in this one.

Pours a two finger light tan head that fades quickly to a thin layer, leaving traces of lace. Cloudy mahogany color. Strong carbonation and medium bodied. Slight malty nose. Flavor is tart with hints of caramel, unusual for a Belgian dubbel. $4.85 for a 22oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, Ma.

22 oz bottle poured into a St Bernardus goblet. Thin tan head, no real lacing. Color is a dull ruddy brown. Some highlights around the edges but otherwise pretty dense.

Smell is sour, and that's not right. I do not associate a strong sour with a dubbel. It actually smells like a Flanders Red. There are some tart fruity esters, but it is overwhelmed by the funky sour. Taste is very sour. Usually I expect a pretty high malt character from a dubbel, but this too tart. As it warms there are some hints of chocolate malts. Not enough to balance. Tart dark berries also develop as it warms.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, mild carbonation. The sourness creates a tight pucker. I'm pretty disappointed with this offering. If it was labeled as a Flanders Red it would probably score better.

Bought this as part of a 3-bomber, 1 glass variety pack. For 14 bucks, I'll do it every time.

A: Poured a dark, reddish chestnut with a nice, tight head.

S: Raisiny, tart. I really can't tell if it's hops tart, yeast tart, or just plain funky bad tart. Not what I expected sticking my nose into a dubbel.

T: Sharp. There is an abject lack of smoothness in this dubbel. The malt silk has been replaced by a sour/astringent taste that's not tasty at all.

M: This beer is pretty watery and as mentioned, not smooth at all. Despite this, there is a small amount of body that lingers on the palate seemingly forever. A nice diamond in the rough while consuming this one.

D: I probably won't be getting this one again. I like Otter Creek's brazen attitude toward some stranger and tougher styles to brew, but they haven't really nailed many of them at all.

Pours a darkish-red color with a one-finger brown head.

Aroma has raisin, currant and even a bit of chocolate in the nose.

Taste is strong and a bit watery at first. Raisin and currant flavors peek through in the middle along with even a bit of chocolate.

Mouthfeel is sort of thin here and it doesn't translate well for the style. Also, a bit too rough in the middle.

Not quite what I'd expect from the style. Not a bad beer but it's just a bit too watery/rough. Perhaps as another user suggested, a different yeast might work wonders for this.

Very dark brown with strong carbonation fueling a persistent mocha-froth head. Nose is strong of candied fruit and yeasty Belgian phenols. Flavors like caramel-coated apple and brown sugar give way to a vinegary sour presence in the finish.

Originally I marked the aroma as a 4.5 because right after the pour it was bursting with spicy fruit character. Now about 15 minutes later the nose is overpowered by an unpleasant sweaty smell.

Not sure what's going on here - initially I was impressed with this beer but my impression has gone south quickly. I actually think I'm going to dump the rest of this.

22 oz bottle

Pours a deep redish brown color with a tan head of tight foam bubbles. Head thins out and leaves nice lace.

Smell is sweet and malty with presents of cheery fruit.

Taste is quite sweet and malty. Raisin, grape and cherry taste comes through quite strong. Had an initial metallic taste that seemed to disappear after warming up a bit (or maybe I just got used to it). Not much alcohol to back up the sweetness. Too sweet for my taste.

Mouthfeel was ok. Not too heavy and light carbonation keeps this beer smooth throughout.

Drinkability is too sweet. Higher ABV may help offset the estery taste.

Picked up a 22oz bottle, and the first thing noted was the strong aroma upon opening. Poured a very smooth, deep brown color. Like others, noted that the first taste is VERY tart and sweet, almost resembling a Coca-Cola taste (actually the color is like Coca-Cola as well...maybe someone switched my bottles...). However, the beer does finish smooth on the back end, with notes of the style poking through. Interesting, but would probably not drink again.

So, I bought the world tour and got a neat glass.

Pardon the mediocre review. I had to pour most of it down the drain. It was first sweet, then sour. It felt like vinegar in my mouth. I even thought that maybe it turned in the bottle.

The color and head were beery, but the thin head dissolved quickly. It smelled of vinegar as well, mind you, an artsy balsamic, but vinegar nonetheless.

I love most every beer for its distinctive character. This was nasty IMHO.
