Appearance - 4.0
Poured a big 3-4 fingers of foamy yellowish head, which thinned out, then disappeared to leave just a few bubbles. The colour is quite murky, golden around the edges, turning to a deep brown.
Smell - 4.0
Banana is immediately apparent, along with tinned fruits including pears, malt, and a hint of rye bread. Not particularly strong, but quite pleasant, especially once the initial banana smell fades.
Taste - 3.5
Certainly not stunning, but fairly tasty and drinkable. The alcohol is more apparent than I would expect, but plays second fiddle to the roasted malt and burnt fruitcake tastes. There is almost no discernable hop bitterness, leaving a smooth and mellow aftertaste.
Mouthfeel - 3.0
I probably shouldn't be saying this, but drinking this out of the bottle definitely improves the mouthfeel, making the beer much creamier. From the glass it feels a little thin, and highly carbonated for an ale.
Drinkability - 3.0
Unfortunately some of the characteristics of this beer would deter me from drinking too many, these being the surprisingly noticeable alcohol and the lager-like mouthfeel that is somewhat at-odds with the taste. However, I could see myself wanting a second in a sitting, provided it wasn't served too cold.
OVERALL - 3.6
A bit of a mixed bag this one. It certainly has its good points and bad points, and definitely tasted better from the bottle into my room temperature pint glass, than from the tap into a frosted glass at the brewery. The price is pretty decent considering it's such a small brewery, probably less than you'd pay for an imported Scottish ale. If I happen to stop by Bush Shack Brewery again, I will probably give this another try, and ask for a non-frosted glass!
