Got this at the Bierkoning in Amsterdam
Bottle into a Pint Glass
APPEARANCE: A thick pitch black beer with no carbonation at all. Pours a very thin off-white head that disappears immediately, leaving no film either. Zero head and zero lacing remains. Basically, a flat black beer with nothing interesting or off-putting going on. Neutral.
SMELL: Roasted malt aromas with nice licorice undertones as well. Some dark fruits play with the licorice in a nice combo. Unfortunately too weak and simplistic to be a whopper, but nice non-the-less.
TASTE: Roasted malt flavors and a bit of that licorice as well. A slight bit of pure chocolate in the aftertaste, which is short but nice. Pleasant taste overall.
PALATE: Medium body with very little carbonation at all. Goes down smooth and finishes pretty dry, but the lack of carbonation and creaminess makes it rather watery and flat. Certainly disappointing here.
OVERALL: This one was a mystery. The nose and taste were quite pleasant, but the boring appearance and the rather unsatisfactory watery feel were always in the way of enjoying this. I finished it but didn't really want to, that's how lousy the feel was. Not very drinkable. Livening up the palate would go a long way in improving this beer. Even if the appearance remained dull, sprucing up the palate to complement the nose and taste would make this a decent session beer. It's a seasonal brew, so maybe they'll improve it next winter.
