I assume this was on a nitro tap. We ordered 2 of these at my table and both were served with a nice nitro cascade effect.

A - pitch black, nice nitro cascade effect when served, solid dark tan head with good retention.

S - light roasted malts, mocha chocolate and sweet oats.

T - similar to the nose but with a real nice blending of and influence by the oats. Nice to finally have one of these on tap and in the style(did I just type that??)

M - light to medium in body, creamy smooth, nice carbonation. crisp clean finish

D - a session beer indeed! This drank smooth clean and once dinner was served, quite complimentary to my meal.

I would definitely order this again!

Pours very dark...almost black. The restaurant was dark so it was hard to tell whether it was black or not. There was a very large tan head on top. It smelled sweet, but I wasn't able to pick out any individual smells. The first thing that came to mind as I tasted it was "vaguely sweet." It didn't really taste like anything in particular that I could tell, it was just sweet...almost like candy. A sweet stout. There definitely wasn't anything bad about the taste, no off-tastes or anything repulsive, it just didn't seem very complex. The freshness was definitely welcome. The first (and only) pint went down easily enough, but I wasn't inspired to order another (especially with the Fire Drake Barley Wine on cask).

Not a bad effort, just nothing that inspired me. My wife loved hers and ordered a second pint. She said that it wasn't very strong and tasted good with her burger. Her comment was that a place like this (John Harvard's) has to make many of their beers on the bland side to please people who "aren't like you." I think she might have been right with this one. It was a good choice for the waitress to recommend to people who "like Guinness."

The beer pours a completely opaque black, absolutely no light shining through, topped with a thick beige head. Trusty nitro head retention, with lots of clumpy lace rings as you sip.
The aroma is dominated by a very smooth roasted malt character. Plenty of sweet oats provide a rounded smoothness to the overall experience. A pleasant mocha quality to the malt, with a touch of yeasty nuttiness.
The sip starts out with a terrific coffee maltiness up front, coupled with a rich, velvety oatmeal flavor. Mild freshly cracked chocolate malt graininess, meandering into some faint fruity fig and plum flavors. The smooth malt continues into the finish, with a dash of earthy hops making an appearance in the end. Some woody, nutty yeast is apparent, reminding me of walnut. A lingering mocha flavor continues through the aftertaste, with a light burnt toffee flavor. Very smooth, creamy mouthfeel, with an almost lactic quality. Medium to full bodied, with typical nitro carbonation.
Very flavorful, even through the nitro. A very impressive, easy drinking stout. I rarely order the same beer twice, but after three of these, I could have drank another.
