On-tap 3/8/08 at the brewpub served in a US tumbler pint glass.
A: The beer is a deep golden brown color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.
S: The aroma is of strong, fruity citrus, pale hops and some caramelized malt.
T: The taste is very hoppy with sweet background flavors of citrus and caramel. The malt character is hearty and there's a decent balance. The after-taste is bitter.
M: Smooth and very crisp, medium carbonation, medium body, finish is clean and very dry.
D: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, nice representation of style. This is a good beer and one that I could drink for an entire evening.

A hazy deep golden colored beer. Inch high fluffy white head retained a few minutes. A handful of carbonation bubbles seen rising to the top. Pillowy clumps of lace.
A very bitter aroma is the first to hit the nose. A malt quality breaks through and brings along a smell of sweet apple. An additonal hint of other light fruits varies.
A gritty malt grain flavor dominates. There is very little in the way of fruit up front, but there is a light crisp aplle quality in the aftertaste. Bitterness is on the strong side.
Decent thickness and carbonation. A slight grit feel on the tongue gets in the way of true enjoyment.
Overall a decent effort in a far overlooked style. Great beer to wash down smoked pork ribs. Great effort from John Harvard's in a rare style. Definitely worth the try.

this brew arrived at my table with a thick cream colored head. i first noted a smoky-fruity aroma. was a black-and-tan color, darker on top than on the bottom where the glass was narrower. The aromas translated to rhe taste, noticed a intense smoky-raisin-ish flavor. it had a bitter, slightly carbonated feel on my tongue and finished mildly acidic. easily drinkable as long as its not your last beer.
