Presented from the tap in a small short goblet the beer was a slightly murky brown color with a slight haze. No head when offered up and no carbonation. Lacing was spotty.
The nose was yeasty and had a decent dose of alcohol up front. Some darker fruits and a slight sugary, fruitty sweetness.
The taste is a little hot up front with some dark candy fruit flavors. A slight sweetness and phenolic character. A little spicy and some clove as well. Flavors really come through nicely as the beers warms up a bit and a boozy strength hits the palate.
Medium body with little carbonation.
An enjoyable beer. A nice beer to round out a meal. A nice "charateristic" dark Belgian taste so I think this once accomplished what the brewer set out to do. All in all a good offering.

Enjoyed on tap at lunch this afternoon. 10.5oz. goblet pour.
A: Pours a dark murky purple and brown color with a nice white head. retention was good. Nice lacing.
S: Yeasty belgian notes coupled with a spicy characteristic. Plums and cherries also come through.
T/M: Dark fruit notes with a yeastyness to them. Slight chalkyness that I attribute to the yeast--not a bad characteristic. Aftertaste of dark fruits with sweet caramel notes. Smooth and silky with an above average body. Abv isn't noticeable.
D: Pretty tasty brew. Very smooth and easy drinking. High abv goes completely masked.

Avoided him like the plague with this one on 1/3/2007. 10.5 oz. goblet pour in the heart of Harvard Square.
On the menu, This dark Belgian-inspired ale is strong and dry with an assertive noble hop character. OG: 18.5 BUs: 31 ABV: 8.5% Light, frothy but full 1/8-inch of head composed of a mix of big and small crenellations; nice, striated lace going down the goblet. As the name implies, black hue redolent of fresh poured pavement. Nonetheless, some visible action is easy to pick up near the apex of the pour, tripping about. Chummy, caramel sweetness on the nose, with a rose water essence coming through; plums and golden raisins parading about too. POM juice jam hits the tongue, with a trailing grape effervescence thats smoothed over ever so slightly by a hint of hop character. Medium-bodied, goes down easily.
Given the ABV and high drinkability, cest dangereux!
