Poured a deep amber hue with a one finger frothy tan head. There was decent retention and good lacing. Served in a snifter.

The smell featured sweet dark fruits, caramel, dark chocolate and dry piney hop.

The taste consisted of a moderate caramel malt, raisins and a drying, but underterminable hop variety.

The mouthfeel finished too dry.

Overall a pretty decent barleywine.

On tap at JH. Pours a cloudy brown with no real head. Aroma of sweet fruits, sweet malt, molasses, honey, and booze as it warms. Flavor of some bitter hops, but it doesn't really have much flavor and as the beer warms the flavor becomes hot and an alcoholic mess. A waste, especially considering it's served in a snifter and the Happy Hour special doesn't apply to it. Pass on this disaster...

This beer pours a delightful, vibrant brownish-red that's not perfectly see-through, into a snifter. There's a small, fleeting tan head atop the brew. The aromas are floral, piney, caramel, and alcohol. You can tell this is a big beer.

The taste is also huge, assaulting the taste buds with massive amounts of piney and citrusy hops, but also a good dose of sweet caramel and molasses. There's a nice, strong alcoholic finish. Mouthfeel is full, and creamy.

Overall this is a good example of a Barely Wine, and a very nice sipping beer from John Harvard's.
