we must have gotten a messy beginning or end of a keg on this one, it looked darker than other golden stouts i have seen, quite cloudy, a muted dull brown washed tone, very little head from the tap, in photos it looks golden and close to clear, so something was amiss when we had this on tap i think. a shame because the combination of gingerbread and coffee makes great sense, and its potential is still evident, its just that the base beer seems weighty, sedimented, and flatter than it should, im sure just a keg issue. some sweetness in the base beer to me, a honey note in the malt, not fermented to dry, maybe even a little lactose, but its not overly desserty to me or anything. the coffee is well behind the gingerbread spices in aroma and flavor, it doesnt quite bring enough roast to this for it to play in the stout category, even with the oats creaming up the body a bit, need more of a roasted depth to this to get to that level. i get a dried ginger thing, cinnamon, maybe some nutmeg or allspice, festive but not overly so, definitely not too much of that in here which is nice, and if it were a cleaner base cream ale, i could see this really working as a nice change of pace for holiday time. hope to try this again under better draft conditions, a miss where we had it for sure, but these guys are way better than this. the blonde stout thing just wont die...
