Got this beer from the "Real Ale" beershop in Richmond a month ago. This is a bottle-conditioned beer, like all other bottled beers by the Fox brewery, and comes in a traditional pint-sized brwon bottle. The BB date is Dec. 05.
A: serving this beer in a big tulip-shaped wine glass, it pours absolutely beautiful black colour and a thick, tight and frothy tan head lasting too well... looking noble.
S: wow... the nose is complex, evolving, yet quite understated--chocolaty note of dark malts, slightly sour nuts, Chinese ink(?!), tree-bark's slightly sharp and raw woody note, softly fruity nose of strawberries+cherries, deeply aromatic hoppy aroma...etc. Making the best of the first three minutes and my senses are here and there... really nice indeed.
T: a refreshing in-take of juicy pale-malts upfront, followed in no time by a creamy texture of lightly sweet dark-malts and tart, raw nutty flavour, against a softly fruity as well as bitter backdrop... turning increasingly dryish-nutty (as provided by raw nuts), and dryish-malty (attributed to crystal/black malts) towards the end, leaving a refreshingly bitter-sweet, dark-malty finish ending rather clean. The bitterness is not as assertive as I'd expect, but just about right for an exotic old ale.
M&D: refreshing mouthfeel given by the lovely live yeast in the bottle is based on a smooth and rounded taste of dark-malts. This is a deeply satisfying yet also appetising beer to savour. Having not tried a single old ale in the past summer, superstitious me take this bottle as a good omen for the coming Autumn season of great beer experience! Highly recommended!
