BOTTLE: 33cl. Brown glass. Red & white label. Best before: 1.3.2016.
IBU: 30. 4.5% ABV. 10.4 plato.
Served cold into a mason jar in Kuopio, Finland. Expectations are average given the brewery. Reviewed live as an American red ale per the label (and name, obviously).
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: ~2 inches wide. Off-white colour. Fluffy and uneven. Decent consistency. Head retention is good - ~5-6 minutes.
BODY: Clear vibrant copper. Notably, it's not amber or red. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.
Looks nice, if not quite to-style. Appears well-carbonated.
AROMA: Hop-forward, to its benefit, with juicy fruity hop notes that are fantastic. Bursts of juicy mango are a highlight. Pale malts and amber malts lend it a nice sweetness that never eclipses the hop notes.
Surprisingly appealing. This is shaping up to be a very respectable red ale.
Aromatic intensity is below average. The notes present aren't as vivid or distinct as would be ideal.
TASTE: Only some of the hop notes found in the aroma are present in the taste, to its detriment. There're some shallow hop notes with hints of fruit, and that's it. Pale malts are present, lending some balancing sweetness, but any amber/red malt presence is way too restrained.
Not quite dialed-in in terms of balance. The build is lacking. Not gestalt nor cohesive. But I do like it for what it is, wanting though its complexity and subtlety may be.
TEXTURE: Overcarbonated to the point of being biting. Medium-bodied. Too weighty and hefty on the palate, lending it a heavy overbearing presence that prevents it from being refreshing.
OVERALL: Downable but mediocre. The aroma promised a much better beer than the taste delivered. Not much of a red ale; it's actually closer to a pale ale. Casual drinkers will enjoy this, but the discerning drinker won't be impressed. It's one of Stadin Panimo's best hoppy offerings, for what that's worth.
