Brief impressions from a 33cl bottle purchased and consumed in Kuopio, Finland:
Appearance is standard, with a white head with average characteristics and a vibrant copper body. Clean, without any visible yeast or sediment. Retention is nice - ~5 minutes.
Aroma is cool and refreshing, with a lime dominance playing into the South Pacific motif. Unfortunately, the hop profile offers little beyond the lime. The malt backbone seems apt, with a classic pale malt profile filling it out; it rightly doesn't bother with sweet caramalt or leavening pilsner malts. As this comes to temperature a bit, some floral and fruity hop notes do emerge. Aromatic intensity is average. I find no off-notes or booze.
Taste is of refreshing lime and tropical fruit, with hints of mango, kumquat, and passionfruit. Any hop bitterness is well disguised by the effective pale malt foundation, which never comes off tasting cheap or too sweet. Like many Finnish pale ales, the hop profile is a bit understated compared to good international expressions of the style, but in this case the beer's balance shines. This is surprisingly well-balanced, with sufficient complexity and depth of flavour. A well-built pale ale with cool refreshing hop notes that fit the premise.
The texture is also well-executed, boasting a refreshing light feel and complementary smoothness and wetness, helping this beer's drinkability. Body is near perfect for a pale ale, and it never feels thin or weak, nor does it come off heavy, syrupy, sticky, or overbearing. Booze is well disguised, and this mouthfeel is a nice companion to the taste.
While it's not gestalt, the loose harmony of texture to taste helps elevate this beer beyond its domestic Finnish competitors, and its balance alone makes it wortwhile. Highly drinkable with a fresh premise and competent execution. This will please the discerning drinker, and may well be one of the best pale ales brewed in Finland. I look forward to trying it fresh on-draught.
That said, it's not a world-class brew, nor is it unique or special. But damn if it isn't drinkable and enjoyable. Were this available at market price in say, the U.S.A. or U.K., I could see many a drinker picking it up by the sixer.
