Served on-draught into a 1 litre stein at Bergkirchweih in Erlangen, Germany in June 2011. Cost was ridiculous, per standard festival pricing. 6.5%. Labelled "Steinbach Brau Dunkle/Festbier" on the board. Reviewed from notes.
A: Pours a four finger head of amazing retention, nice cream, and decent thickness. Colour is a dark brown.
Sm: Nutty notes, hops, caramelized malt, and full bodied fresh clean barley. A pleasant mild strength aroma.
T: Slight nutty notes, hops, malt, and slight caramel. The hops are rather plain and have no real character; they were likely added merely as a preservative. Pretty plain all around. Not a great festival beer. Quite simple. The finish is stale and disgusting. Nothing like a dunkel; I don't know why it was labelled "dunkle". A bit imbalanced.
Mf: Smooth and wet, but not overly so. Doesn't quite match the flavours of the body.
Dr: 1 litre at a festival is too much for such a low quality beer. The stein imparted a ceramic note which I found unfavorable. I hate steins as a serving vessel. Terribly overpriced. Hard to drink on account of its limited quality.
