On cask at Belfast Beer Festival, 2016.
Mahogany with tan legs. 3.75
Soap and caramel. 3.5
Crackers, sticky caramel, slight nuttiness, touch of toast and that’s all, folks. 3.5
Vague leaf to end.
Round, almost medium, chewy. 3.5
Pale ale with malt syrup. No real speciality malt character. A downright bad example of a mild. 3.5

The fourth beer tasted by half-pint at the Chelmsford Summer Beerfest., 12/07/2006. Gravity-dispensed. From the name it's not hard to guess it's brewed to a recipe dating back to 1874AD~~
A: copperish colour with less brownish hints; no head, static body, and looking rather flat.
S: brown-sugar and treacles abound, with an overwhelming malty presence; at the back a date-jam like preserved fruitiness and a rounded flower-estery note linger, extremely intense and focused. Aromatic and rich, 110% full-bodied for a Mild that is barely 3.5%abv.!!
T: like the smell, the palate is dominated by dried dates and longan-fruit tea, fast proceeding to a dryish yet slightly sour+bitter-sweet edge of roasted/smoked malts, true to a Dark Mild; a dried date's flavour stays in the finish, with lots of aroma of preserved fruits and malts lingering along with a good length of bitterness.
M&D: as light as a Dark Mild should be, yet rather thin in the finish, which is a pity. Not bad at all, and I admire the result of recreating a beer that a few happy people in 1874 were drinking. Worth a try when you see it on cask!!
