In four recent pints of Mash Tun ale, the best virtue I found on any of them was the aroma on this house porter. It didn't especially light my world on fire. But compared to everything else I'd been getting, it was at least respectably engaging. It held a light roasted character that bordered on charred.
Penfold offered a mix of roast barley flavor with an undercurrent of caramel sweetness. Its black body with ruby highlights felt a bit thin and the beer's overall demeanor was lax. Head and lace were entirely absent and the beer came across as fatigued and blasé while still clinging to a modest threshold of drinkability.
