The colour is brown (40 EBC), the liquid is clear. The two finger head is beige and compact, it sinks slowly leaving some fine lacing on the glass.
The smell is dry with roasted flavours and a robust bitterness. Dark chocolate, prunes, pumpernickel and a touch of coffee. Clean bitter notes and some sour malty flavours.
The taste is creamy and semi-sweet. Dark chocolate and some cocoa. Hints of charcoal and mild coffee, prunes and German rye bread. Medium body. There is warming alcohol in the aftertaste as well as medium bitter and grassy hops, dark rye bread and a touch of liquorice. Higher alcohols and black malt in the finish.
The carbonation is quite strong, the mid-sized short-lived bubbles tickles the tongue. The liquid is dry and a bit sticky.
This beer is somewhere in between a Vienna lager, a Schwartzbier and a Baltic Porter. I did like the dry malty flavours, I didn’t like the solvent-like alcohol in the finish.
