Tastes all tropically and citrusy and stuff.

Follow our journey as we tweak our way towards the perfect IPA. Step by step, beer by beer, on and on. Forever!

This beer was supposed to be brewed in February of 2019. It wasn’t. The government shutdown in the United States ment we couldn’t get labels approved. We had to re-think. Now however, in May of 2019, the United States government isn’t shut down. Labels can be approved and, the beer can be brewed!

When we export beer to the US from Sweden we only export beer that travels well. That means imperial stouts and sours. Still, we want people in the US to try our take on hoppy stuff as well. So, together with Twelve Percent Beer Project we’ve started to explore ways for us to brew these kinds of beers closer to where they’re enjoyed. We’ve had all the chats. We found a nice spot. And, now it’s time to get going. Here’s Tropically Citrus. We hope you like it!

Tasted in a Spiegelau IPA glass from a one pint can on July 5, 2019. Look is lightly hazy orange gold. Smell and taste is juicy citrus and tropical fruit. Feel is medium in body.

On the quest to create the perfect IPA, the brewers of Dugges explore aspects of tropical fruits and citrus fruits as they are displayed through the use of hops, along with hazy techniques in ale making to promote a tantalizing fruity IPA full in flavor without loosing its refreshment.

Aptly named Tropically Citrusy, the sunny and hazy beer sheds a creamy eggshell froth that holds a range of aromatics that swirl around citronella, herbal, spicy and orchard fruits. Its prefumy upstart leads to a lightly caramelized, honey-dipped maltiness that's shy of shortcake.

And as the hops unfold on the middle palate, a more citrusy pattern emerges as orange blossom, tangerine and red grapefruit. Tropical flavors of mango, papaya and pineapple play second fiddle to the citrusy before the hops trail into an herbal, peppery and grassy finish of strong sun tea, fresh spruce and lemon pepper with a moderately strong measure of bitterness.

Not quite hazy, not quite West Coast and certainly not the common Midwestern balance, the IPA borrows trends from each of these trends for a unique but friendly approach to high hop beers even while trends spicy with curacao liquor warmth and a trailing bitter spice.

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Real nice clear somewhat body, a beaming mix of amber to light orange color, filled with a three finger but small retention bright white head. Some staying power but tends to dissolve pretty quickly with large bubbles. Definitely a little bit of haze.

Aroma of citrus and tropics? That's not the first thing I get. A real unique sort of woody burnt aroma, hinting of earthy qualities. It's actually pretty neat, but very unexpected. Some more examination provides a definite tangerine orange sweetness and oil sense.

Palate is full of fruit, but hard to discern. Nice mixes of spicy hop and citrus quality. Seems to lead more towards orange character than tropical, with some juicy orange and light bitter zest. Some other fruit tones seem to jump in but are hard to describe, and also take away from some of the citrus enjoyment.

Neat hop profile but it doesn't seem to showcase both advertised notes well. They sort of cancel each other out but a tasty solid drinkable IPA remains.
