Poured from a 12 oz bottle the liquid is dark and inviting, with good carbonation. The head is ok smallish with a dark tan foam the fade fase to a pad leaving no lace.

The smell is close to sour cherries, faint roastyness.

The taste is of a god Awful Infection of yuck sourness.

Mouthfeel is better but dang why sell this?

The drinkability is just not there. MK

A: Dark brown/blackish stout. Looks a bit thin...but we'll see. Khaki head has fallen to respectable level

S: Lots of black patent, sour blackberry, oak and alcohol.

T: Whoa its sour. Is it supposed to taste this way? Tastes a bit like fermented charred oak. Iced coffee with sour milk that transitions to powdered chocolate flavors. Aftertaste of grape sweet/sourness

M: Cloying and thin yet prickly.

D: I'm not sure I'm going to finish this...

Picked this up at Woodman's Food Market in Green Bay on Sunday 4/2/06.

Poured a dark coffee color with about a half inch of carmel colored head which was gone almost immediately, leaving nothing but a faint ring around the outside of the glass.

It tasted nice enough but really didn't seem to have much depth of character. It was a little smokey and peat-like. Mouthfeel was not particularly interesting but not objectionable. A bit "thin" for the style, though.

Not quite what I expect from a "traditional" Imperial Stout but drinkable none the less. I'd like to see Falls Brewing grow and develop some higher quality brews. Perhaps they'll keep tweaking their recipes until they come up with some beers that will rival those from many of the top flight breweries in Wisconsin. I love a good success story so I'll keep my fingers crossed that they can take it to the next level.

You know, I was pretty sure this was going to be awful. Given my previous experience with Falls Brewing, I certainly didn't trust them with a style like RIS, but dammit if it's not too bad. Not really to style, but it's at least drinkable, which is a step up from the Falls Porter.

The website describes it thusly: "Kool Komrade is a traditional Russian Imperial Stout. Long on malt flavor with a pleasent [sic] hop bitterness."

Not sure where the pleasant hop bitterness is, but there is a little bit of the pruney Russian Imperial flavor, albeit all but drowned out by musty Munich malts. Also featuring a bit of chocolate and old coffee grounds, Kool Komrade doesn't seem particularly strong, and I certainly doubt Falls' ability to hide the alcohol; rather, it's just a watery stout. Still...it's at least passable.
