Either something has gone wrong or this is awful - judging by the positive reviews it's presumably a bad batch

April 2013: 500 ml bottle conditioned, will soon be available at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 5.2%. Auburn colour, moderate off-white head. Aroma of caramel, dark dried fruits and "dusty" hops. Rich malty and earthy flavour, mild roasty notes, some caramel but not too sweet, dark dried fruits again, reasonably hoppy finish. Nice one.

500ml bottle.
L: Light haze, chestnut colour, thin but long-lasting head. Glossy sheen.
S: Sweet, syrup sponge.
T: Caramel plus a hint of citrus. Semi-sweet, bitter & dry.
F: Light-ish body but the mouthfeel is super smooth and soft.
O: A premium ale that balances caramel malt and leafy hops perfectly. It’s light bodied for the style but it’s incredibly drinkable.

L: Nice, somewhat hazy orangey chestnut
S: Chocolate, sponge pudding (the kind that one used to be able to find in tins), some zestiness
T: Reminiscent of 'Quality Street' orange chocolates initially, which gives way to a hoppy bitterness
F: Well-bodied, smooth, quite complex

Bottle conditioned. Mid amber/auburn in colour. Deep tight frothy head.
Creamy malt and nuts. English hops.
Fruity flavour. Digestive biscuit and green leaf.
Soft on the palate due to the conditioning.
Enjoyable.

Poured a nice dark orange/brown with a big fluffy white head.

Complex nose driven by a spicy malt with some bread and toffee - very nice.

Palate has some bread and cookie notes but a more fruitcake-like note dominates. Rich and quite powerful.

Body is medium to full with a good mouthfeel.

This is a lovely rich and well-balanced beer.

Highly recommended.

Pours heavy; a bright chestnut and just a film of tan in spite of an energetic pour. 3.75
Chewy caramels, sugared raspberries and autumn leaves - deep and wintery. 4.25
Big butterscotch MO up front, dried cranberries, madeira cake and a touch of orange rind. 3.75
Lime rind finish and clean limestone linger.
Chewy, round, just about medium. 4

Challenger and Goldings.

A bit heavy and undercarbed - very CAMRA - and also hot for only 5.2%. Yet interesting for how suddenly clean it ends in spite of some dessert notes and the thick body. Not the best Best Bitter, but enough quirks to see where this might have won something. 4

bb040114 2nd tasting 6 weeks from last. ap: amber, long-lasting head. sm: berry. ta: chestnut, appropriate bitterness and sweetness. mo: creamy, full-bodied. ov: superb malty bitter. So different from many strongly hopped beers available in bottle. I'm not surprised this beer has won several awards.

A: Huge fiarly creamy latte head, chestnut brown, red body, cream colored head. lots of yeast caked around the inner opening of the bottle. More translucent. Barely visible rising carbonation.
S: Slightly sweet creamy coffee malt, but not strong in scent.
T/M: Slightly gritty, close to moderately bitter. Slightly astringent. contains some coffee malt, but relatively bland.
O: Very middle of the road.

Brown 500ml bottle, best before Nov 2008, drank on a very cold March 2008 evening.

Bottle conditioned, so poured very carefully so not to upset the sediment, into a pint sleeve glass.

Huge biege head sat on top of a deep amber body, not quiet clear, but not a cloudy mess either.

The aroma comes from both Golding and (fairly local) Worcestershire Challanger Hops. The beer is made with Wheat and Barely, so those add to the beery smell being imparted. A very English ale smell is what I am trying to discribe.

The mix of Maris Otter Pale Malts and roasted Crystal Malt not only ensure the colour is typically an ale colour, they also give the beer its truely Englishness flavour.

The bottle recommends the beer to be taken with mature Shropshire Blue Cheese, I'll second that. If you have read some of my other reviews for this breweries beers you will know all about their brewery trips and what you get to eat etc.

The 5.2% is understated although there is a hidden depth to the taste and it certainly stays in the mouth long after the beer has gone and you reach for another swig.

Another fine beer from one of my favourite breweries.
