Sampled at 5:02pm, the day before Thanksgiving; it was one of the first pints they poured.

Clear, reddish-bronze in hue, it was served with a white head but it was a stadium pour. I only received a soapy cap. Hell, it was more like a soapy collar. It really wasn’t a head, just some foam resting on top of the liquid. I wish it was poured better but those are the breaks. Not surprisingly there was no subsequent lacing. Sure, the color is attractive but beyond that the appearance does little to excite me.

The nose is pleasantly spicy; it is like a spicy tea mixed with a Christmas cookie. Nutmeg, coriander, orange peel, light cinnamon. There is not much malt in the nose; this worries me. There is moderate potency. Inviting, I do like what I smell. The direction of this beer is clear. Talkative but it does have a one-track mind. It is spicy but wanting on any other aspect.

The palate is mild but enjoyable. There isn’t much malt on the tongue, this beer is slick. The spices are the only show in town. Like the nose I found ample coriander, cinnamon, nutmeg, some pepper, and some ginger. In the background is some orange peel. The aftertaste is a mix of all of the above. The palate lacks a malt base; at best it is cookie-like and equally thin. For a Winter Warmer this beer lacks beef, the abv is low as well. This beer has some tasty qualities but I don’t understand the direction this beer is taking. This is not OSA, nice try though.

Medium-light in body, low carbonation, the mouthfeel is on the thin side. Workable but the lack of malt really hurts the mouthfeel. More body is need, pronto!

This beer might be too adventurous for regular Omaha folk but it is not tasty enough to wow a seasoned craft beer drinker. This beer is lost. I might enjoy another pint or two this winter but Upstream’s Ebenezer blows this beer out of the water. Sure, they are not the same style of beer but they are both winter seasonals. JC lost this seasonal battle (not like they are competing?). If I want a spice beer, I will drink OSA at the Moon. My sample was quaffed at the brewpub in downtown Omaha.
